Year of Ceueervattve rule, this depart-
ment was rau at as loss of $71e1 152. Last
yeart tinder Liberal rale, there was a
surpths of over a million dollars—after
the ettabliolament of hundreds of addi-
tional post dams. In addition it may
also be said to the credit of the Govern-
ment that the postal rates been been
greatly reduced, a two for which the
people are grateful.
The condition of the public debt is a
good indication of the measure of pros
-
putty enjoyed by the people. The pub-
lio debt in 1800, after the Conservatives
had been in settee eighteen years, was
$25S,497,452. When they assumed power
in 1878, the public debt Wei $140,362,060,
sa that in eighteen years they added to
the burdens of the people the sum of
$118,135 383, Equivalent to an average
increase of about six and a half millions
per annum. Daring eleven years of
Liberal rule there has positively been no
addition to the public debt, but surpluses
have been created amounting to over

Toronto, Nov. 19,—At the City Cattle
Market, the run of stook to -day was 100
oars, with 1,750 head of cattle, 2,382
sheep, 600 hogs, and 166 calves.
Trade was active at tho City Market
to -day, and prices steady for good but-
cher cattle. There was a heavy run,
but plenty of buyers, though prices are
steely at two lower ranges for poor
qaality. There is still a heavy propor-
tion of poor stuff coming in, with the
good loads only few and far between.
There were not many export cattle to be
picked out to .day, but there is a demand
for good well finished cattle for the ex-
port trade.

What is the Roret of a groat pairlting ? What gives it its power .?
We the INrELLIGENT WORK that is itt it.
Now, it's the same way in everything.
Take the Clothes, for inatance, that have been improperly and
carelessly cut mad tailored—that have been merely preeeed into a tem-
porary shape semblance by Old Doctor Goose, the Hot Flat Iron,
Those poorly made garments will " go to pieces" a very shorb time
after they have boon worn.
Whereas the Good Snit —that which has had INTELLIGENT WORK
put into it—will hold its Style, Shape and Pit for a good long tirae.
Now, how's ono to tell the difference between the poor and the good?
Well. if you have worn any of Maxwell & Hill's Clothes, you
already know.
If you have not, then try ns for a SUIT or OVERCOAT and you
will very soon find out.
Oar Clothes have the maximum amount of skilled and conscien-
tious tailoring put into them to insure all-round excellenoe.
They say times are hard. Well, our prices suit the times.
Now don't wait, but call and see us right away and avoid the Christmas
