NOTES AND COMMENTS.
unknown. It the coal is found in large
quautitiea relief is in eight for the
Ontario householder and manufacturer,
at a time when the price of anthracite is
climbing up to $8. The deposit should
not be allowed to fall into private hands
but should be worked by the Govern,
ment and distributed by the Govern-
ment railway. A little foresight shown
in this matter to -day may save a world
of hardship in the future.-Torouto Star.
.A. convention of the Liberals of South
Brune will be held at Walkerton on
Thursday, Oet. 24, for the purpose of
nominating a cendithtte to contest the
Riding at the approaching elections for
the Legislature. Hon A. G Mcli`ay of
Owen Sound, will deliver an address.
At a largely attended meeting of -the
Liberals of Soatn Huron hole. at Heusali,
on Thursday, Mr. H. K. Kellerman, the
popular metals -int of Dashwood, was
unanimously chosen the Liberal. standard
bearer for the Legislature. Mr, Henry
Smith, president of the association, Hon.
A. G. McKay, leader of the Opposition
in the Legislature, and a number of
others gave rousing addresses.
The Conservatives are taking much
oemfort from the result at Brookville,
they aro welcome toit all. Every think -
lag man knows that a bye -election in
the province of Ontario at this time bas
no great political signitioanoe. It can-
not he denied also that the people are
more likely to support one who is in
sympathy with the Government in
power than another. Had the Conserva-
tives opposed Hon. Mr. Graham who had
been called to the cabinet and succeeded,
then the affair might have had some
significance. This result has no bearing
on Dominion politics, for the reasons
given, and cannot be regarded in any
other light than a local one. Mr.
Donovan was popular, he supported the
government in power, and was elected.
The time to denounce the Whitney Go•
verument will shortly arrive and no
doubt the electors of Brockville will be
quite equal to the task when the time
arrives.
The government are pursuing a dig-
nt.ted and constitutional course with re•
speot to the Japanese treaty. Sir Wil.
frid declined to act in a panic, thus fur-
nishing additional evidence of his states-
manship. It has been decided that Hon.
Mr. Lemieux. poetme,ster•genernl and
Minieter, of Labor shall proceed to the
Japanese capital and open up negotia-
tions to settle the very iutrioate and de-
licate problem presented. The people
of Canada may have every cmfidenoe
that in Mr. Lemieux's hands their in-
terests will not suffer, As this matter
may be regarded as sub judice, perhaps
It would be well to let it remain until
Mr. Lemieux can deal with it in Tokio.
It is generally believed and practically
admitted that the Outerio Government
will introduce a redistribution bill at its
next seseton. Not being in the secrets
of the party we can only accept current
rumor as indicating some of the changes
contemplated. It is rumored that the
whole of Goderioh township will eo into
Swath Huron; the wheat of Hullett tato
West Huron, and the town of Wiu;;ham
into East Huron. Should ibi3 be carried
out, it would make the East and South
fairly safe Conservative constttueuoies,
and the West a Liberal scat. Of course
this may not be the acteai outcome of
the contemplated redistribution, though
we are disp lead to think it will not be
far astrsy -Clinton New Era.
The old days when an ocean voyage
meant complete rest and relief from
business and other worries have passed
and gone. As Mr Dooley recently re-
marked: "No sooner is he out of sight
of Sandy Hook lighthouse than he gets
a wireless message oonveyiu' th' glad
tidings that his wife has fallen down
stairs and broken her leg," and through
this beneficent invention he is kept con-
stantly in touch with the stock market,
the baseball situation and any other line
of endeavor in which he happens to be
interested. A daily paper is published
aboard ship which contains, not the
news of the ship. but the news of the
world. The old recreation of betting on
the distance to be travelled by the vessel
is replaced by betting ou the rases at
Sheephead or the result of the last ball
game. -Milwaukee Sentinel.
Mr, Gibson, deputy miuister of mines
for O..tarto, says it his been known fur
thirty years that there is coal in the
Abittibi district. It is a lignite, softer
than bituminous coal, and crumbles
easily, but Mr. Gibson sees no reason
why it should not be used for manufac-
turing as well as for domestic purposes.
The deposits have so far lain idle because
the region was inaccessible, but this
difficulty will soon be overcome by the
extension of the Temiskaming Railway
and the building of the Grand Trunk
Pacific. The extent of the deposits is

Then what? That would mean

Fasten it tightly to your scalp !

more than a simple hair dress-

PONDER OVER THESE THINGS.
Sciatica Gured
Mrs. Chas. F. Haley Restored by Dr.
Williams Pink Pills.
"1 was utterly helpless with sciatica.
I could not move in bed without aid.
Doctors treated me. hut I did not im-
prove. I used Dr. Williams' Pink Pills
and to day am a well woman " This
tribute to the merits of Dr Williams'
Pink Pills is mads by Mrs Ohne. F.
Haley, of Yarmouth, N. S. Two years
ago she suffered moat severely from an
attack of sciatica, and fora. number of
months was an invalid confined to her
bed. She further states: "It is impossi-
ble for me to describe the pain from
which I suffered. I endeavored to cou-
tiune my profession as it music teacher,
but was forced to give it up. The doc-
tor said the trouble was sciatica, but his
treatment did not help me. I could
scarcely take a step without the most
acute pain shooting through my bank
and down the limb. Finally I took to
my bed and lay there perfectly helpless,
and could not move without aid. The
pain wa3 never absent. I consulted an-
other doctor, but with no better results,
and I began to think I would always be
a sufferer. One day a friend who was in
to see me asked why I did not take Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills, and on her advice
I decided to do so. The result was be-
yond my most hopeless expectatious.
All the pains and aohee disappeared and
I have never since been troubled with
sciatica. I have no hesitation in recom-
mending Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for
the trouble from which I antlered."
When the blood le poor the nerves are
starved; then comes the agony of s.iati-
oa, neuralgia, or perhaps partial para-
lysis. Dr. Williams' Pink Pills actually
make new, rich, re'3 blood, which feeds
the starved nerves, drives out pain and
restores health. It is because these
pills actually make new blood that they
cure such common ailments as rheuma-
tism, anaemia, backaches and headaches,
heart palpitation, indigestion and the
painful irregularities of growing girls
and women. Yon can get Dr. Williams'
Pink Pills from any lnedioine dealer or
by mail at 50 cents a box or six boxes for
$2 50 from the Dr. Williams' Medicine
Co., Brookville, Ont.
Do the people of Canada realize that
the Government is administering the
affairs of the Dominion at a profit? Do
they understand that every department
of government can show a satisfactory
balance•eheet? Has it been told them
that speculators cannot get the land, the
coal, or other natural resources of the
country, but that these are preserved for
the use of the people at large? Have
they been informed that the tariff pro-
dncoe sufficient revenue to pay the ex-
penses of government and provide a
surplus for a rainy day? Do they know
how carefully the expenditure of every
dollar is audited and accounted for by
responsible officials? Are they apprecia-
tive of the boon the Grand Trunk Pacific
will prove when completed? Have they
followed the work of the .Railway Com-
missioners who are busy spanning the
continent with another line reaching from
the Atlantio to the Pacific? Have they
watched the progress of great public
works in every province of the Dominion?
If they have, then Sir Wilfrid Laurier
will long be Prime Minister of Canada,
and he will never be stronger than when
appealing to the people at largo for an
ondorse:nent of his policy, which has
made of Canada an embryo nation.

WHITECHURCH.
The wet week has made the roots look
up, and the grace now needs the sun.
.A. new furnace is being put in the par-
sonage, and cement walls inside the
foundation walls.
The old oil lamps, which have been in
nae since the Methodist church was
built, have been discarded and four arc
lamps put in their place. Gasoline is
need, which sends out a splendid soft
light,
Apple picking is the order of the day
now, and we wonder where all the bar-
rels go, anyway. Packers are paying as
much as $1.50 for fall apples, and some
have been offered $1.75 for good winter
fruit.
The anniversary servioes of the
Methodist Church were held last Sunday,
Rev. G. N. Hazen, B.- A. of Goderich
preached in the morning to a large con-
gregation. Taking as his text the words
"The kingdom of heaven is within yon,"
the speaker delivered a splendid sermon,
In the afternoon Rev. W. G, Howson,
of Wingiam, occupied the pulpit and
preached one of his pathetic sermon's,
painting pictures in his beat style. His
tett was taken from John 14: 16, Many
favorable pomment, were heeit-d as to
the address of the afternooti. In the
evening Rev. Mr. Hazen continued the
subject of the morning, taking as his
text, Matthew 20: 26, 27. The choir
rendered splendid music during the ser-
vices, ill solos, duets and/ quartettes,
Mrs. Finlay presiding at the organ. No
entertainment was held this vear in con-
nectiou with the anniversary, but a
thanksgiving supper is being arranged
for, and we are looking forward to a
social time then.
Live Stock Markets.
Toronto, Oct. 15 -The rota at the City
Cattle Market for to -day was 61 loads,
with 1,050 head of cattle, 1,780 sheep
and lambs, 650 hogs, and 90 calves.
There was but a slight run to -day,
and prices were steady for the choice
butcher -cattle. In spite, however, of
the smallness Of the offerings, trade was
very slow and draggy. There was the
usual large proportion of very poor stuff
in the market, some of it was almost
unsaleable, canners and rough cows sell-
ing as low as $3 or $4 each. For any-
thing decent, however, in the line of
good butcher cattle, prices were steady
at recent quotations. A feature of to -
days sales was the sale of a load. of
twenty-four very choice fancy quality
feeding steers. This drove was the
property of Mr. A. A. McDonald, of the
Fort Ranch, Victoria road, North To-
ronto. The price was $4, plus $15 on
the deal. This is by far the best price
made for feeders this season, but it
proves that for the cattle there is always
a good market. For the average run of
feeding bulls and steers prices are steady
at $3.25 to $3 50 for steers and $2 25 to
52.50 for bulls.
