field, but latterly of Clifford, was mar-

—The engagement is announced of
Miss, Flora A. Nixon, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. George Nixon, Teeswater, and
Mr. Robert Billed Curran of Owen
Sound. The marriage will take place
Wednesday, Oct. 16th.
—Palmerston's rata of taxation for 1007
is 30 mills. We thought Wingham had
the "honor" of having the highest tax
rate of any place in Ontario, but now
Palmerston comes to the front with one
mill higher than the rate here.

the Wingham Business College are, Mr.
Johu Steel, Teeswater; Miss Edna Staf-
ford, Buffalo; and Miss Phemie McIa-
toeh. Ripley. 'We trust their stay in
town will be pleasant and profitable.
—Slander is a blighting sirocco—the

the loathsome worm leaves a path cov-
ered with slime. How truthful it has
been said: "Living, he is a travelling
pest and worse, dying impenitent, his
soul too deeply stained for Hell." How
often do we bear the slanderer's ton-

Mr. James Cummings, of Toronto was
visiting for a few dad s at the home of
his father, Mr. J. B. Oummings.
Mist Sara Farquharson has been visit-
ing for a few days with her brother, Mr.
John Farquharson at Teeswater.
Mrs. Jas. A. Haugh and two little
daughters have returned home after a
two weeks' visit with friends in Tees -
water.
Mr. William Bird has returned to her
home in Hamilton, after spending a few
weeks with her old friend, Mrs, Wm,
Wheelens, and friends in Belgrave and
Wingham.
Mr. and Mrs. Jas. ,Eilio•t, who have
been visiting with relatives and friends
in Wingham and dietrict for some time,
returned to their home in Stellton on
Wednesday.
Mrs. A. J. Nicholls has returned home
after several weeks visit in the Weetern
States. She was accompanied home by
her brother, Mr. Mitchell, who will visit
in Wingham.
Mr. Burvilla Griffin, who spent a
week at his home in town, left on Tues.
day morning for Taft, Mont., where he
will spend several months with a rail-
way surveying party.
Mr. Maxwell Graham, of Glasgow,
Scotland, has taken a position with his
brother-in-law, Mr. J. H. Christie, in
hia grocery store. Should he like this
country, Mr. Graham will bring his
family from Scotland.
Rev, T. S. Boyle and Mrs. Boyle left
on Tuesday on a trip to St. Catharines
and Montreal. In the Intter city Mr.
Boyle will preach at the reopening ser-
vices at the Oathedra), where he was
previously Senior Assistant.
Mrs. Dinsley leaves this week for
Detroit, where she intends making her
home for the winter montne at least.
Her many friende in Wingham will re•
gret to hear of her leaving town and
hope she may again return to Wingham
in the spring.

CHURCH NOTES.
Rev. J. M. Horton, rentor of Ripley
will conduct the serviees at St. Pant's
next Sunday.
The children's meeting in the Baptist
church on Saturday afternoon will be
held in the fature at half past two.
Melville church, Brussels, has given an
order for 400 individual communion cups,
trays, &o, which will be used at the next
communion services on Sabbath, 13th
inst. A special offering was taken a few
weeks ago to defray the expense of the
oups.
Rev. H. E. Allen, pastor of the Bap-
tist church, will continue the settee of
sermons .on the Beatitudes next Lord's
Day morning. Topic, "The Blessedness
of Meekness." In the evening Pastor
Allen will preach the second of the series
on the Lord's Prayer. Topic, "God's
Parental Responsibility." Everybody
welcome.
A most gratifying announcement
made at the opening meeting of the
Methodist Board of Missions in Metro-
politian Ohnrdh at Toronto was a re -
cora revenue of $451,000 for the year, an
increase of $38,000 for the past twelve
months. The board has charge of mis-
sions in Canada and in the foreign field
of China and Japan.
In the Methodist church next Sunday,
the Communion service will be held, at
the close of the general service, morning
and evening. The pastor's subjects will
be, at 11 a. m. "What we find in the
uncovered heart of Christ." 7 p.m., "The
invisible environment of our lives; and
the touch of an unseen hand." The
pnblio are invited, to time bright and
helpful services.
Public School Board.
The regular monthly meeting of the
Public School Board was held on Tnes-
dity with all the members present and
Chairman Lloyd presiding.
The Principal's report for September
showed the average attendance to be
as .follows:—Room 1, 56; 2, 43; 3, 49;
4, 45; 5, 48; 6, 48; 7, 70; ranking atotal
average attendance of 322. The re-
port wase adopted.
The following accounts were passed
on motion of Trustees Griffin and Ross:
—Town of Wingham, water rates, $6;
A. Young, supplies, $2.28; Welker:Bros.
Slating Oct, $4.
The sir lady teachers presented a
petition asking that their salaries be
increased $25 each, pointing out that
under the rales that two of the teaohers

It was moved by Trustee Rall, second-
ed by Trustee Isard, and carried assns•

On motion of Trustees Herr rind
Moore, Principal Mnsgrove's salary was

On motion the salaries of the teachers
5n4 officers were ordered to be paid.
