NOTES AND COMMENTS.
It is said that Premier Whitney and
Several of his ministers will make a tour
of the province this fall, holding public
meetings. Are we to have a provincial
election next year?
Mr. R L Borden, M. P leader of the
Opposition has announced the dates for
his meetings in Ontario. The nearest
plane to Wingham which he will visit is

Sound.
Baeing his calculations on the number
dealt with by the Provinoial offioiale,
and the number going direct to the
Dominion Government'a employment
agents, Mr. Thos. Southworth, Director
of the Bureau of Colonization, thinks
that the immigrants to Ontario this year
will total about 70,000. About 80 per
Cent of these are from the United King -
dote and the remainder from European
countries. In 1906 the total immigration
into the Proviuce was 57,744, and in
1905, 34,958.

EDUCATION IN ENGLAND..
To she Editor of the WINcnreas TILES:
DEAR SIR,—I attended the formal
opening of the High School in your town
hall and enjoyed it very much; but I
was surprised to hear the remarks of H.
E. Allen,,atatiug that he received his
education in England, and that pupils
do not get the sumo attention from the
teachers there as in this country; that
in England the knowledge is thrown at
them in chunks, like a bone to a dog, for
the pupils to do with it as beet they eau.
I think Mr. Allen's case mast have been
an exception. I received a common
school education—jest the three R's and
a Iittle useful knowledge besides. I
found the teachers and master the 'very
beat, anxious to help me in anything,
and on very fine days in spring and slim-
mer would take ns otzt in the woods and
fields and teach ns the names of herbs'
and their uses, also the fiowess, birds,
etc Leaving school when very young,
I attended government evening art and
science classes, acquiring a knowledge
of what would be useful in the trade I.
was learning. We could not have had
better treatment if we had been sone of
the Xing. From my experience in this
part during the past eighteen years, and
of the Englishmen who have lived
atnongst as for a few years, I ,Haat say
they looked well cared for, were sueoess-
fal in their calling, and, like Mr. Allen,
tenet have made good nee of the chunk
and treated it in the same way as the
hungry dog the bone. I believe that to-
day, as fifty year ago, there is no place
on earth where you can give your boy
or girl an education as cheaply* as in
England. Technical evaning schools aro
established all over the Country, and if
English boys and girls are lgnorant it le
' their own fault,
Trusting, Mr. Editor, you will publish
this to Chea/ that all parts of England
are not alike, remain
Yo'urs truly,
