Dairy calves generally requite some con- centrates until theage of 8-10 months. ' Good forage could supply 'an. increasing.. percentage of the ration'after 4-5 months. Concentrates will certainly be needed when the ' forage quality is low. ' Calves should receive col- ostrum for at least the first 3 days. and then milk at the rate of 8-10%of body weight during the first few weeks after birth. A milk replacer at an equivalent level may be. substituted. Calves can gen- erally be'weaned from milk at 4-6 weeks of age or when they are consuming some hay and starter ration daily. During the first week of the calfs life, good quality hay and at least an 18%-20% starter ration should be avail- able to the calf atall times. The calf should be allowed all. the starter it will eat, up to a maximum of 4-5 lbs. De- creased amounts of milk should be fed'. and the calves weaned when they are .con- suming 4-5 lbs. starter daily. Do not feed finely ground or dusty feeds, but rather crack- ed or rolled grain. Early cut, green, leafy, soft stemmed hay is the best forage and the calves should: be offered all they will eat. After 4-6 months of age, the., calf' starter may be replaced with * 16% protein ration. Knox what you, need In determining the amount and kind Of concentrate:, t needed, it is .absolutey es- sential, to know what type of forage is available and the analysis of that forage as, to crude protein.. ;c'aleintn, phos- • phorusand magnesium etc. It is then. and only then, that ' a concentrate can be selected, that will supply the neces- sary amount of additional{ nutrients needed at the low- est cost. Hays and• sllages, vary greatly in composition, depending on the stage :of f o►: rc e, matutity at time of eliding cu init process, etc. but the chemical aaaly s will give I s this information A simple concentrate mixture maY, then be compounded': 'from. the above forage flgnrea .available. Simple niiixtures, are just as effective as complex ones, as long, as the necessary re^ quirements are met. Nat - ability and nutrient content, rather than the number of ingredients in a mixture,; largely determine the value of feeds for dairy cattle._ ARNQI.D JSTiNNISSE.N, UK— — and .Mortgage, insurance :Plans income TAN Deductahle.Registered 'Retirement'Savings Flans and Annuities; Income ' Averaging Annuities Ask kr our new Flexible :l'remini u R R.S P. --REPRESENTING--- TeI.527 -0414.. ;Sun Life Assurance 117Com an of Cr GODERICH ST: EAST' R Y 40 Q d: SEAFORTN for l9 years, Excellent Quality.
