At Seaforth District f-igh. School, last
week's " hopefuls are this weeks
CHAMPiONS.
Last Thursday, in what was described.
as one of the greatest displays of school
spirit at SDHS in recent memory, the entire
student body rallied behind the junior
girls' basketball team, helping them: to a
strong 54 to 31 win . over the team, from
Stratford Northwestern Secondary School.
The game was the first in a two game
seriesto decide the •winner of the
Huron.Perth conference. The champion.
would; be' determined by the point total
over the two games. With a 23 point lead
after the first game, Stratford would have
to win the second by at least 24 points to
come out on top, i
Although this seemed like ah, almost
impossible task for any team, the
Northwestern Huskies nearly 'pulled it off.
Thesecond game, of the series was played
in 'Stratford on Tuesday. The first half of
the match was fairly even, with the
Huskies taking a 7 point. lead. The second
half saw Seaforth get into foul trouble, and
lose Mary Thompson in the first minute of
the; third quarter. This obviously hurt the
team; as Mary is the tallest, and one of the
best players, on the Seaforth• Whippets.
The Huskies seemedto get all the breaks
in •the second half of the -game, while
Seaforth's girl had difficulty in. getting the
ball through theri;n. The final score of the
game., viewed by mere than 130 SDHS
students" and: cheerleaders,' was 47.28. The
pointspared was only 19, five less than
what Stratford needed to win the series.
The Seaforth juniors were the champs after
all:
When the team arrived home Tuesday
afternoon, they were taken on a parade
through town on Seaforth'sfire,
department's biggest truck, pumper #1,
complete with sirens. When Seaforth. wins,
everybody knows, Later, the girls were
treated to dinner, courtesy of the school
and Coach Dick Burgess.
The girls hope to continue their winning
trend .as they travel to Tillsonburg
December 1, to play in the 'WOSSA.
competition• against, teams from; across.
Southern Ontario. Good luck girls,,
The SDHS senior' boys' team cannot, be
forgotten either: This • Friday night they
host a 4 team round-robin tournament,
which will see the return match against the
team; from Amherstburg. Last year
Amherstburg played herein the same
tournament, and walkedaway with first
place. Later in the winter, the Seaforth
seniors travelled totheWindsor, area town,
and in a performance surprising to both
.teams, almost beat Amherstburg only` to
lose by 3 points in the last minute of play.
The rematch of Seaforth versus
Amherst burg promises to be the highlight
o . Friday's .games at the school; which run
through the afternoon ' and into the
evening. Anyone wishing to see a good
brand of high school basketball is invited to
attend'.
Down in the United. States, basketball is
one of their major sports. This : week's;;
events show that there: is plenty of
enthdsiasm for and enjoyment of the game
in this area, , Hopefully in the future
basketball .will become one of Canada's .. `
major sports as . well. It - certainly is at'.
