BY ALAN SCOTT, Ag. Rep.
E.L. RO'THMEL, Assoe.'Rep
The Dhiveisity of Guelph
recently conducted a survey
on the reasons for culling
dairy cows from .the herd.
30% of the cows were culled
for reproductive problems,
Another 20.5%:, were sold for
breeding purposes. Low pro-
duction claimed another
14%. Other reasons included
mastitis, udder breakdown,
• foot and leg problerns;- sick-
ness, injuries and a number
of miscellaneous teasons.
The study points out the
importance of coming; to
•grips With reproductive prob-
lents - often by working a :
. little harder on ration formu-
lation. It also shows that
fainters may not get around
to culling for low production
because they are losing so
many animals for other
reasons, %,
