HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1979-11-08, Page 7Alfie Dale of Seaforat has gained a good; dealof recognition for the painstaking;. sketches he draws while holding a pencil in, bis mouth. New, thanks to anew electronic system installed by the March of Dimes in his Chalk St. South home a couple of weeks: ago, a whole new world of independence has opened up for Alfie who lost the use of all four limbs .after a diving accident 14 years ago. Front his big comfortable chair in his. itvtng room, the new system. allows Alfie to turn, the radio and tv on and; off and change the stations; to activate a new intercom to. find out who's at the door and then unlock Quadraplegic can now use it; to answer;the phone, dial out on it and record calls,, music or conversations, in the room and: turn on a room light. He turns the system, called TAW for Technical Aid and Support for the Handi- capped, on with a tap of his chin or mouth.. It's attached to a ;microphone and Alfie taps a big circle to turn on the function, in this case the phone, then starts tapping out: the number he wants to call on the mike's, smaller circle. After tapping out 5, :then. 2, an inadvertent tap onthe big circle disconnects the call, Alfie $ets a dial torte: and has to start all over again, Sure it's slow, but it's anawful lot better Rifle Dale, with, cat Skisie and, his new control system. them .never' being able tq talk on the phone. at .all, unless Alf's wife ii green held the phone for him. '•Youmake all sats: of mistakes at first, Working in the function (whichever ap- pliance he. wants to use) takes :time. The phone will be the hardest,'" Alfie thinks. Because the two circles are hard to distinguish at night„ Alfie then blows or sucks on a straw to activate the system.. As well as the inm+cr:.i'il •:s 'ill, front door, Alfie and Lorcen are eL c : glad to have a sonar alarm that Alfie can turn on to sound outside the house in case of an: emergency or an accident. Close neigh- bours have been alerted and know what it means. Richard, the electronics expert who spent a, couple of, days with the Dales. installing the system says its, only the second one in a home in Ontario, Base cost is about 5.1700 but when accessories like the radio stand and tape recorder are added he estimates Alfie's unit cost about 53000. He explains the TA$H. system can be applied to any appliance.a handicapped person wants to use. In Alfie's case that • answer door meant hooking it up to his CB scanner and equipping the Dales' phone with a bread- cast: speaker so be can hear pagers without being near the phone.. The system has a remote switch which. means Alfie can work it from anywhere in the house. And he'llgbe able to take it with. him if he has to go to hospital and link into the nurses' station. Long hospital visits, in the ;pat, 'likethe, month be spent in London's 'University Hospital last year, have been pretty grim as Alfie was, unable to. use the bell, or communicate with- anyone ithanyone outside his room. While) Alfie and Loreen are delighted by the system, they laugh that it's taking', some time to get used to. After showing a reporter how each gadget works from Alfie's remote control aparatus, including the intercom through which Alfie inside can talk to whoever"s at the door, the Dales. realize one switch was left on. "Oops, we're talking outside now. Got: to watch that!" Alfie says. lowe''eJustnimaginel the possibilities for.
