snacking is not necessarily
"just a bad habit" if you:
choose the right foods!
The key to wise snacking
at home is to maximize the
number and kinds of "good"
snacks .and minimize the
number of "bad ones. This
is sure to be of help to
anyone's willpower (or lack
of .it). The excuse that "it,
takes time to prepare most
nutritious snacks and easier
just to grab a doughnut or
potato chips is often 'heard.
But with a. little planning
ahead', it's easy to overcome
- while you've got the salad
fixins" out, cut a few extra
carrot and celery sticks, and:
put them in the fridge for the
snackers in your home. Mak-

Here's a crunchy com-
bination of natural cereals
and';grains, great for break-
fast or
reak-fast.:or snacks. You, can even
make granola bars from it!:
METRIC CRISPY GRANOLA
Yield: 1 litre
1000 mL rolled oats
250 mL wheat germ
125 mL 'sunflower seeds,
unsalted
125 mL sesame seeds.
250 mL coconut,. shredded
50 mL• brown sugar..
50 mL liquid honey
'125mL':cooking oil
5 mL vanilla
2 mL salt.
125 niL raisins
1. Preheat oven.. to 150° C
(300°F)
2. Mix together rolled oats,
wheat germ. sunflower seeds
sesame seeds and coconut in
a Targe bowl.
3. In a small bowl, combine
brown sugar, honey, cooking,
oils vanilla and salt.
4. Add honey mixture to, the
dry ingredients and blend,
thoroughly,
5. Spread mixture in a large,
shallowbaking pan.
6. Bake for 45 min. stirring
occasionally.
7. Remove from oven. Add
raisins and cool.
8. Stcrein air -tight container.
GRANOLA BARS
Yiel
500 mL metric crbarsspygranola
125 mL brown sugar
5 mL baking powder
100 mL butter, Melted
5 mL vanilla
1. Preheat oven to 150°C
(300°F)
2. Combine all ingredients.
3. 'Press into a 2L; 20 cm, x 20
cm baking pan.
4. Bake 20-25 minutes. :or
until mixture starts to bub-
ble.
5. Place pan on rack and cut
- into. bars.
6. When cool, remove from

7. Place bars on paper .iuwel
to absorb excess fat.
