Hunting;
There was a. time when hunting was a
vital part of survival. Either you bunted for
food„ oryoudidn't eat.
Those days are long gone now. But
hunting is still .a partof our. society. There
is one. big difference though: hunting is
now a sport,, rather than a necessity. And
this sport appears to be growing, as the
-price of foodspirals with inflation,
Aswith any sport, organization is the
key to•s.uccess:When several people with a
comtnoninterest get together, they usually
form a league or group. One, such gt'oup is
the Seaforth Sportsmens Club.
To. help further the enjoyment of
hunting, and to help get more people into
the span, the -club" sponsored a`'hunter ,
safety course, run by member Dave Dale:
Re is a licensed instructor, and worked in
conjunction with •the Ministry of Natural
Resources to provide' the course.
Basically;' the 20-25, hours of instruction
covered safety in the handling of firearms.
Many other aspects of• hunting were also.
included, such, as• archery, orienteering,
survival and conseryadon. The course is
mandatory for anyone under the age of 20
who wants to get his hunting license, but
it's also suggested for alt new hunters.
It .is interesting to: note that of the 13
people to take the course this year, four of
theri were "women Hunting is not just a ..
sport for men.
The'1979 hunting season is well under
way now, and according to Dave, it's been
'`a. little below average", as far as yields.
are concerned. But he also says that. it's
picking up now. as the, rain received in the
last couple of weeks :has filled up the
ponds and provided wet marsh areas for
game birds to stop for rest. The problem
:fart been that many .of tlte. "local" birds
had moved .towards Lake Huron, after
August; and September were overly dry."
But, now the northern birds, such as
Mallards and geese, are coming through,
and the hunting is improving.
The Hullett Wildlife Management; Area,
better known as the iullett Swantp, is an
ideal area for hunting fowl and small, gante.

Hamilton, as well as frorn many other
areas, come here to try their luck. So many
come in fact that at times up to 90 percent
may. be from out of the immediate region.
Although the local hunters become a little
annoyed at the overcrowding, it is a good:.
sign
It is good ih that people know that the-
area
hearea is here. This will be important: when;
the plans to turn the -marsh into a.
sportsman's area are completed. These
plans include flooding the swamp to form
several small' lakes and ponds, and
creating an excellent hunting - spot. In'`'
addition to this, there will be nature ,trails,
snowmobile trails, improved -trout and. bass •
fishing, nesting grounds for wild birds, and
areas for cangeing,'And the list goes on
and on. .
The pro1ect is being funded toa, great
extent by a private recreational. `:group,,
Ducks . Unlimited. They wilt be working
along: with the. provincial government to
create, and 'maintain this $1.73 million
:development. After • it iscomplete& the
area will be funded.' by the government,
and run on a break-even basis.
What, does all this mean? Well, first of
all, it will create' a 'controlled hunting
region, which is good for all involved. It
will provide a large 'outdoors recreational
area for people who want to "get away
from it all" for an afternoon. School trips
will be organized to go throught it. There
will always: be something available to do
out there, whether it be snowtnobiling,
cross-country Skiing, -bird`. watching or
hiking:
And , of course one' must' realize that
people will be attracted ,tothe township
and neighbouring communities froxn• all
over the province, as: well as fromsome:of
the nearby, states. Thesepeople wilt
spending money here. Great for the
regional economy.
it is.. dug in a large way, to the ancient,
tradition of hunting that we olive thanks for
getting ` this project underway; a project
that will turn waste swamp land into'
valuable hunting and recreational grounds:
