From a Nov. 1918 Huron
Expositor
The following excellent
and interesting letter was
received this week by G.A.
Sills of town, from his son,
Lieut.C.P. Sills, Canadian
Artillery, at present in
England:
Witley, Surrey, Oct. 28, 1918
To most of us and : most.
assuredlyto the Hun,,. the
writing on the wall is plain
enough', the end of the war is
in sight, and these stirring.
days of long . sought victory
are without doubt preludes
to a steadily; approaching, day
of peace.: •
How soon, no one can tell,
but it be itnear or far,
nothing is -more certain, that.
after weary years of trial and
suffering unbelievable, Blind
Justice has decreed, the. Hun
shall pay the debt due the
defenders of all that stands
for Righteousness, and so as
we come nearer the day we
long have wished, so also do
we surely: approach the days
of Reconstruction.
"Tis then we 'shall have
time, yes, long years of time,.
to reckon up our losses.' Can
you imagine the day of joy for
many, when with the light of
well earned victory in their
eyes, bur boys come march-
ing home': , But can you also.
imagine the dreadful number
of aching hearts ,, on that self
same day, aching for the boy,
who shall never come back,
and what of the boys who
have given their all, shall we.
bring; them back?
The. Americans have de-
clared that all their fallen
shall bp brought back when
once the war is over, and that
they shall be buried• in .the
Homeland. To them, in the
newness of their lossand in
-the comparatively short time
their men have been : en-
gaged, no ancient sorrows,
will be brought again to
light. For timedoes dull the
pain of loss sustained, and in
the glory of the sacrifice our
boys have made, we whom,
they died for; become recon-
ciled to the decree of , fate.
Hence, what good purpose,
would be served in bringing;
back all thatremains of our
best and bravest.
When. we consider, the
blood of our boys has sane=
tified the land on which they
fought and died; and when,
ve also reflect that in, their
narrow beds, crowned with:
the little white cross, tender-
ly cared for, they sleep so
peacefully. Would itnot be to
their greater glory and' last-
ing fame, to leave them as
they are, forever a monu
inent to faraway Canada's
,effort' in the causes of Right
as also:: their. own gallant
efforts to defend all that they
held. dear: In. such historic
spots as the "Bloody` Sal -
lent," "Courcellette the
grassy slopes of "Vimy,"
and "Cambria,' made fam-
ous by the brilliant deeds of
in
our fallen heroes, .what could
be more., fitting than that
these same heroes should lie
in seried ranks, ghostly de-
fenders still of that same, fair
country, until the sound of
Gabriel's Trumpet! Did they
not offer " themselvesfreely
and having given their all,
- why deny them the rightto
all the praise and love; future..
generations of the land they
1
helped to free,will surely
always' show them..
We most assuredly,owe it
to them, to see that„neglect
shall never be their portion,
at our own hands. Therefore,
these:"groups of crosses,
marking as they do, the
hallowed ground wherein our.
soldiers' sleep,should never
be touched except by loved.
