PRESIDENT GEORGE
MQ.LEIR
_ This year we are celeb-
rating the SOth anniversary
of the founding of Branch 156
of the Royal Canadian
• Legion. Marking this
founding, we remember and
honour those men who
clearly saw the need for our
organization. The men , were
all veterans and their ex-
periences on the battlefield:
made them aware of the help
required for the injured.
survivors and. the bereaved
families. Giving this help has
always been a basic principle
of the Legion. While the
receipients of our assistance
may have changed over the
50 years, the spirit of kind-
ness and compassion that
inspired our founding
members is still our guide
and driving force.
The Seaforth Legion acts
as much more than a social
club in the community. Our
brnnch has a number of.
noteworthy events.
We provide facilities
for community.•-
functions.
We sponsor both , public
speaking ' and essay
competitions for the. students
in area schools.
We sponsor an air cadet
group and have always , lent

out support to minor hockey,,
and other sports activities for
young people in the
community.
We also provide a monthly
social afternoon for a Local
senior citizens organization
and bring veterans from
Westminister Hospital to the
Seaforth Legion for a
social hour and meal provid-
ed , by
rovided,by the Seaforth Legion
Ladies, Auxiliary.
Since there haven't been.
any recent wars . or armed.
conflicts, the supply of new
members from the ranks of
ex -servicemen has
diminished. Also, the pass-
aged of time has reduced our
numbers due to ,death and
infirmity. ,
Now the Seaforth . Legion
accepts the sons and
daughters of ex -servicemen
as full voting members of the
organization. We also accept
other • members . of the
community as affiliate
members, although they do :.
not have voting privileges:
We ' are confident .that, 1
with the help of our new
members, and hard work on
the part of all of us, the
traditional tasks of the
Canadian Legion will be
continued and that the
Legion will always be a
source of pride to ourselves
and .;to those • far-sighted
charter members who.
organized this branch :50.
years ago.
