at Kilbarchan
BY MABEL TURNBULL.
This morning we discov-
ered :a very special visitor.
Eveyln Maleolm, our expert
naturalist. brought : a dark
coloured worm which she
found: on a milkweed stem..
She said it would turn into a
beautiful monarch butterfly.
Apparently they feed on the.
green milkweed leaves. She
had .it in a large jar with
plenty of milkweed leaves for
it to eat. We have been
watching it develop the.
chrysalis from which it
develops into a butterfly.. it
was a bright green from the
green of the milkweed. The
covering in which the wings
develop was delicate like a';
thin skinand shiny.
This morning, we discov-
ered the perfect monarch
butterfly had hatched out.
leaving thedelicate drys'
casing behind. Our butterfly
is anchored on a twig in a
flow,er-por flexingits wings
back and forth almost in the
king motion. We will.
release it outside. we hope.
on a sunny day. Last year we
tried to have one hatch out
but it failed to do so, 'It is
wonderful to be so close . to
one of nature's miracles:
i Was sorry 1 didn't see the
cracking of the, chrysalis and.
the butterfly emerge. It did
so overnight. To see it come
out One would have to be nn
constant watch. Several
people saw whiitwe believe
was our butterfly on the town
