The best advice that Shir-
ley Siddall of Brussels could
give someone planning on
making home renovations is
to "work with the house you
have instead of trying to
make it intosomething
else."
And Murray and Shirley
Siddallare making a number
of renovations to their house
on Turnberry Street includ-
ing making a new bedroom in
the house where they took off
one of the bedrooms in the,
three bedroom house and
.made it into . a bathroom.
Thus the location of one of
the bedrooms has changed,
but it will still remain a three
bedroom house.
The Siddalls are also in the
process of re -doing the kitch-
en : but at the moment are
only half done. They are also,
vvi
couple learns
insulating throughout the
house wherever possible.
They have renovated, re-
drywalled and changed the
closet around of one of the
bedrooms upstairs.
They have reconstructed a
side porch so that it will be a
mudroom, washroom and
new entry to the basement.
The old basement stairs will
be closed off so that the
Siddalls can have a closet put
infor the front hall.
"At the same time we're
trying todo restoration as
well as renovation," Mrs.
Siddall said, citing for
example the ceilings which
had been lowered in the
kitchen and livingroom. The
Siddalls are going to put;
them back to the original
nine foot height.
Mrs. Siddall said that all
the windows in the house
•
have the original glass as far
as they can tell but, there
were some, panes that need-
ed replacing which they did
with the glass from the storm
windows.
The couple haven't really
been surprised by any prob-
lems. In fact, Mrs. Siddall
said they probably expected
more problems than they
found.
"We didn't expect to find
it in good condition," she
said and added that whoever'
had done the wiring in the
house, had made it sufficient.
for all. Siddalls will use and
that the: furnace was fairly
new.
She said they feel that the
house has been built in three
sections so ".that createsa
bit of a problem (for reno-
vations) but it's just some-
thing you deal with."
The Siddalls have a . gep-
eral contractor doing the
major portions of work on the
house . while Mrs. Siddall
does the painting and paper-
ing and finishing' the cup-
boards which still. have to be
painted.
Mrs. Siddall designed the
cupboards which • are a pull-
out type herself and she also
designed the bathroom
which also holds the washing
and drying machines.
The bathroom also has a
separate little room. for a
toilet and sink with sliding
door entrances on either side
so that the Siddalls can 'enter
from their bedroom on one
side and so Mrs. Siddall
could be , doing laundry on
the other side without dis-
turbing anyone.
Murray is putting siding,
on' at the back of the house
himself and the Siddalls will
do the landscapding them-
selves.
