• A few of you may recall my move into an
apartment three years ago, The movers
consisted of family members and a friend
of my nephew whe dropped in at the wrong
tittle for him but the right time for us. He
was commandeered onto the back of a•
, pick-up truck with a rocking chair and a
lamp. « ,
The things about the apartment . that
made the biggest impression on the
movers were the twenty steps leading up to
it Therefore, it was with some trepidation I
announced ,1 was moving again this
summer. O •
I had two points in my favour. Firstly,
the furniture would be carried down the
steps this time, and secondly, the new
place had no steps. The only thing I didn't
mention and hoped 'they wouldn't realize
was that I owned more furniture than when
I moved in.
Family loyalty came to the fore again to,
save me the'. cost of hiring professional
movers, but 1 don't think I should move
again for awhile; that might be pressiA
my luck.
Moving day was preeeded by the usual,
hours of sorting through drawers, cal)-
, boards, nooks and crannies. How one
person could collect that much junk in such
a short •Iength of time I'll never under-
, standl
'Logical soul that Lint 1 tried to do too
many other things when 1 was supposed to
be getting ready to move, and most of the
work was left until the last two or three
days. But, in spite of myself, the move
went off without a hitch.
If you are faced with the prospects of
relocating, here are a few tips that worked
for me and -might work for you.
First, a sister who has moved at least
five time in the past eighteen years will be
able to pack your dithes.,pots and pans,
ornaments, books and odds and ends in
half as many boxes as you would probably
need.
Secondly, a mother and sister who are
, sticklers for cleanlinesswill scrub right
over your objections. In addition, they'll
probably have tucked away somewhere a
pair of curtains for that bare window in the,
extra bedroom or a bunk bed that the kids _
don't need anymore or a lamp for that dark
corner in the living room.
When' moving day arrives, have at least
two pick-up trucks - owned, begged or
borrowed.
Competition can be a tremendous asset
if applied properly. 0 For example, take a
teenageboy who is deterreined to prove
he can move faster than and carry a heavier
load than his father and grandfather, and
match hint up against a father and
grandfather who are determined to prove
he can't.
Add a teen-age girl who is.' getting in
shape for her high school track team and a
brother who taunts her with a remark, as
"'You, can't carry that all by yourself.
You're a girl!" is sure to make her pile
k, another box on. her 'load.
A seven-year-old boy, who likes to be
where the action is; will make countless
trips up and down stairs . carrying small
boxes, bedrodm. lamps, and odds and ends.
Finally, a brother-in-law who was in the
furniture business for a couple of years will
be indispensable. If possible, catch hint
when he has been out of the business long
enough to lose his hostility toward it but
not long enough to forget hovv to load and
tiriload furniture, lay carpet, hang drapes
and other useful skills.
Moving day was successful , for. me.
Through it all 1 remained fairly calm,
except` for an incident near the end of the
day when seven voices hollered from seven
different directions, "Where do you *ant
this put, Elaine?"
My solution was to grab a cushion and
seat myself comfortably on the floor in a'
central locatien atid answer them all, "Put
it wherever you like."
