Clark and Davis, University of Ihtn is; W. ''tris American, Dairy Science Assoc, ,em- phasized feeding the high, producing dairy cow- it mow suggested the ,feeding cycle covered a 365 day period or from calf to calf, Therefore, there would be ;5 periods .•. namely, dry cow period, pre -freshening period. (less than, 2-3 weeks before fresh- ening/. ;post freshening to: early lactation, :mid lactation and late lactation, " It was pointed out that maximum milk yield is ob- tained when a cow is given a 60 day dry period. Condition- ing of the cow for the next lactation should start during! late lactation. The high pro- ducer is much more efficient in converting, feed energy to flesh while lactating (late lactation). Excess fat can reduce feed intake after calving by the release of larger than normal amounts of fatty acids into the blood which depress appetite. It was also stressed that in the transition from a dry cow ration to a milking ration, the dry cow should be given some grain 14 days before calving, This should, start with one pound, increased. one pound daily to a maxi- mum of •approximately 10 pounds pre freshening. With proper dry cow feed 'for- mulation at this time, the authors pointed out that milk fever, udder oedema, ketosis and other metabolic diseases could be avoided or lessened. As the cow changes from non lactating to .-her peak. flow, the nutrient require- ments increase 300-700...% as a direct result of mammary gland needs for milk' flow. This is the critical period and goes from calving to peak at about 4-10 weeks after fresh- ening, Since D.M.intake stays behind peak milli flow even • under the best of conditions and diet, high. producing cows must draw upon, body reserves to make up the 'deficiency Protein and energy are •the major nutrients ;ui short supply during this period. There is a definite need to provide higher levels of dietary pro- tein for maximum milk, flow ;Lapp. 0.8 lb. protein.'` 10 .lhs* nnilk produced.); Energy, protein and fibre must be balanced, not only to. obtain maximu. m milk flow but also proper rumen fune- tion. Excessive intakes of concentrates not only' ,re* duces: B.F. but also causes reduced feed intake and; rumen dysfunction. Maxi- mum energy intake is at- tained when. the D.M. con- sists of approximately 50.60%, forage and 40-505 concentrate.. FEED DONATIONS. FOR OXFORD The Ag. Office at Wood- stock is coordinating feed donations to the farmers hit by the tornado, 'they can be contacted; at Box 666, Wood stock, N4S 7Z5 - phone 537-6621. An offer of standing hay isn't much good as the people have neither time nor equipment to .harvest it at this time. The hay should be; harvested and. stored forfuture delivery. The donationoffer will be passed to a committee which will allocate it according to the need of the individuals.. There have -already been some offers of hay and straw. Apparently, they are in need of grain donations, We'll keep readers in- formed of this system as we getmore information. WIBITE'MOULD NOW ON SOYBEANS The same white mould that affects white beans is doing some damage to soybean fields in Perth and Huron ` counties. The total damage will probably be small, but areas of some fields are. being affected. About 5% of Ontario's • soybeans are grown in Perth and Huron. The disease ratty be in 25%. of,‘ these fields.
