Mr. Dale said in his earlier lawn bowling;. days, bowlers dressed in the traditional; "whites" more often than they do today, and bowled as doubles or rinks. What were the skillsneeded by good bowlers? - "commonn sense, good feet and good. hands," Mr. Dale said. ' Mrs. Ida Close, the second charter. memberof the club who still takes an active role in the Seaforth Ladies Club, said. the appeal of lawn bowling lies in the fact' bowling is "a 'delightful game." which combines sport with. sociability. In 1929,when the ladies club was formed, 35 women joined the club. Two other members of the first club still living in Seaforth are Miss Belle Campbell. and ' Mrs: Beth Bechley Over the years the ladies haveraised money by sponsoring card parties and catering" for the men's' tournaments. The main difference in the catering is the price - in 1933,. for example, the women served visiting bowlers a full course meal, with homemade pie for dessert, for thesum. of 35 cents: Since Mrs..` Close joined the ladies' club '50years. ago the .game has changed. Rinks, once a popular pastime .with four bowlers playing against another rink, have almost disappeared and today doubles and singles are the most popular games'. Today, the ladies play at the bowling greens on "Monday afternoons:, 'the men on Monday night and there are mixed games on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Mrs. Close 'said new members are always welcome at the club -and, there '•are extra bowls available for anyone who warps to drop by for a game. Some future "members of the Seaforth Lawn bowlers may be the SDHS students who use the greens once a; week during the school year as part. of their physical education program., Seaforth' Lawn ' Bowlers have always. played in, competition for a number of trophies donated by local lawn bowlers. Each year the ladies compete for the M.Y. McLean trophy donated by ,the then Huron M.P. in the early 1900's while mixed teams compete for the Soole trophy: The open tournament' trophies include the Ab Whitney ' trophy for ladies, the Lorne Dale trophy. and Commercial Hotel. trophy for men and the new Stewart Bros. trophy, • presented in honor of the late Harry Stewart. Mrs. Close said over the years she has played with the Ladies Lawn Bowling Club,, she has enjoyed "the ' harmony and pleasantness in playing and working on the greens." Seaforth bowlers' belong to District #4 in tournament competition, which means they play • againstclubs' from Wingham, Goderich, 'Clinton,, Exeter, Mitchell And Stratford. , •U. A number of local members have gone .on . to compete ,in tournaments at the provincial level. John Patterson, another member of the - club, .said lawn bowling has.: always provided a. very pleasant:; activity .for an evening. He said bowlers Can put :into. the game what they want:- and play just for relaxation or for competition. Age isn't a. barrier - 'some bowlers are stillplaying when in their 80's,•: and "competition is. there for all levels of interest." :The executive of the Seaforth Lawn Bowlers' As'sociation:' is president, Clare .Reith; vice president Dave Cornish;; secretary Stanley Hillen and treasurer. Dehydration can occur suddenly, but will. generally build up over a two or three day period!. In extreme cases, death can occur, but even, in its milder forms it can cause problems for you especially if you're in the hush, Lack of co-ordination and disorienta- tion are two .symptoms that can be ;dangerous while hiking. The end result could be a serious injury as a result of a ,fail. or losing your way from ramp which would only compound ;the problem, Two other signs to. watch. for are restless sleep (excessive dreaming and insomnia) and. a darkenin, g of the urine. When these indications occur, increase your fluid intake (even if you don't feel thirsty), and add more salt to your diet. A few salt tablets packed in your toilet or first aid kit are a good idea along with some water purification tablets if the quality of your water supply is doubtful, These 'few precautions can easily make your outing more enjoyable. Heatstroke is summer's equivalent to hypotherni is and is caused by an almost completely opposite condition, Hypother- mia occurs when the temperature .of the core area of the body drops, while heatstroke is a result of the core tempera- ture rising to a dangerous high. People die from heatstroke every year and often it is a result of the victim's companions not recognizing the symptons of the stroke, and confusing it with a heart attack. Heatstroke will occur as a result of overexertion on a hot day whenthe body's ,cooling Mechanism cannot keep up *0 the . • mandDeh'dratioaf :alsO plays, 4 Part de y here, so if you're not accustomed to Working in the, heat, take it easy' during ,a hot wave. The --tither time heatstroke can occur is when the air temperature rises above the normal' body temperature. In this situation, if a check in perspiration occurs,. the circulatory system, reverses its function: and starts to raise your internal tempera- ture .instead °flowering it. What happens is :that: instead' of • the blood in your capillaries being; cooled through evapora P of ers iration, itis actually, warmed tion P P • by the air temperature above normal body temperature causing prostration, The sud- den, eollapse of the person involved is one . reason why this. affliction is often, . confu s..ed wth a heart attack. What do you look for toguard against heatstroke? Dehydration again plays a big role to be sure to keepthe fluid intake up during' hot weather. In. the first stages of heatstroke, the, victim will often sweat excessivelyand shows: signs of irritability. ,-. If a person collapses in -hot weather, they should be treated immediately for heat stroke. Get the person into shade if possible, remove as much, clothing as possible, and cool them down. Dousing with water and vigorous fanning • will increaseevaporation and promote the cooling process, When body temperature drops to normal, keep the victim out of the. heat and sun as much as possible, and get them to see a doctor, Heatstroke is nothing to fool with. The bottom line of this whole article is of course- -increase your fluid intake during. hot weather. Drink lots of water, and you. should be all right. 410 0 Mr. Farmer......
