Another activity that

Sport alk
by Paul Ellis
BY PAULELLIS
;Looking for a sport that doesn't require a
lot of skill or other people? Why not give
cycling a try?,
Just about anyone can ride a bicycle, as
long as he has two legs.
1 The only piece of equipment that you
really need is of course the bike itself. And
nowadays almost every family has at least
one bike, if not three or four. In Seaforth
alone .there are .literally hundreds of 10
speed .bicycles; to say nothing of all the
other types
.1f youare setting out to buy a new bike,
at the current prices, itis advisable to get a
10 speed, or a 5 speed. They are •much
better built and far more dependable than,
3 speeds, which operate on an entirely
different mechanism principle.: Arid be-
sides, they are easier to ride ., and a five
mile trip becomes a pleasant outing rather
than a Chore to 6e left to the muscular or
5 ?lightly. eccentric (read `. mildly insane).
If mofiey is a problem,: there 'are always
the old standbys... the high-rise with the
"banana" seat or the old standard, single
gear bike. However,. the difference in cost
is.usuaily too small to justify the step down
iii' 'quality. That's not to:, say that these
types are not ell built. However they are

one, but the result would be a good laugh
for everybody else, Make sure the Polaroid
is handy!
O.K.. so' let's assume you've got a bike,
whether you had to beg, borrow, or. .
.well, beg or borrow. Now what? An
in -town cruise to show your friends that
you're determined to beat least as fit as a
65 year old Swede? Or perhaps a long
distance ride in the country, past herds of
Pedal p
r
bewildered cows. To them, if your family is
with you, you'll look like a big, funny
family of some sort of ducks. But who cares
what cows think anyway?
If you want a. good ride of some distance,
but don't plan to make it an all day affair,'
try going around a country block. That's
five miles; which.; can easily be done in half
an`hour.
For those of you who feel up to
something : a little more challenging,try
riding to a near -by town. Maybe Clinton.
Or;'even Bayfieid where you could stop to
observe the beach scenery
Hot summer days are great forcycling,.
but take along some sun -tan: lotion. You
can get pretty badly sun burnt, as I found
out the hard way.-
Historically isneaking, recreational
'cycling is a fairly new sport. But it's caught
on very well, especially with the present
P gasoline situation. The miles-. Per gallon
that a bike can get is unlimited! And the
:health craze of the 1970's, with a strong
helping hand" from the federal: govern-
ment's .Participaction ';program, has led
more and more adults to riding bicycles as
both a . means of entertainment and
exercise.
If you're gchng„to buy a bike for yourself
or a child;it pays to get a good one, and to
take care of it. Although some 10 -speeds
range up to S250,'reasonable quality canbe
attained for about half of that.. `Unlike the..
auto industry, parts' for bikes aren't very
expensive;'
Alright now, go get out that bike and use
pedal power. You'll see why kids enjoy it:
What's that old cliche? "It's like riding a
bike. Once you learn how; you never
forget.”
