In honor of the anniversary
the church published a hist-
ory of their congregation and
pastors, including photo-
graphs of the families who:
attend the church.
Mrs, Johanna:. Lubbers
said the church was decor-
ated with bouquets of flowers
and 'both the Canadian' and
Dutch flag were flown in
honour of the anniversary',
since most members of the
congregation are of Dutch..
descent.
A special guest at the
service was, Charley Walkom
of Munro, . whose family
attended the -Bethel United
Church for many years. Mr.
Walkom's wife is now the
choir director at the Bethel
Free Reformed Church.
The' Free Reformed
Church of North American
was started in this area by
Rev. J. Tamminga and his.
family who settled in Canada
in 1951.
In the win ter of 1954, • a
small number of • farnilies.
started .a "Huisgemeente
in the Stratford area; and in
July,.1954, formed the begin-
ning of the Mitchell • emigre
gation. The present pastorof
the: church, Rev. C.A.
Schouls, is " a son-in-law of
Rev. Tamminga.
From the'tinie the Mitchell'
church was organized, regu-
lar services were held on
Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 1
p.m. and in the early days,
lunch was brought by
congregation members and a
period of fellowship. enjoyed
between the services. The
members "stayed -over."
since many travelled long
distances to reach the church
and many worked for ' local
farmers, :andenjoyed: the
chance to talk over their
experiences .- with' • fellow
immigrants. .
The congregation . origin
ally net in the Mitchell town
hall. Then by 1955, the
church had changed its meet-
ing' place to the Anglican
Church' in Dublin, and' the.
'pastor was Rev. J. Overduin.

When the congregation.
outgrew the Dublin church,
they rented the Legion Hall
in Mitchell,but still hoped
for the day when they could
own, their own church build-
ing.
The chance came in 1959'
when. a former movie theatre
on Mitchell's Main• Street
came tip' for sale. • The
congregation bought the
building and transformed it
intoa place of worship. The.
new communion setfor the
church was brought. from the
Netherlands and _ delivered
by N. Menger, a former
church member,
Then in 1970,.on Good
Friday, the congregation
celebrated a : special -service
of dedication; in the church
that is now the home of the
Bethel . Free Reformed
Church of Mitchell,
The former Bethel United
Church, at the Munro corner
was originally built: in 1903,
and: was a .Methodist church
until union'- in 1925, The
• stained glass' wi,ndow above
the front door still reads
Bethel Methodist Church.
The last service at Bethel
United Church was held in
June, • 1968. If the Bethel
Free ' Reformed Church
hadn't purchased the build-
ing, it would have .been
demolished.
In' 1977, the congregation
built a new 'parsonage in.
Mitchell and. Rev. Schouls
was installed as minister in
1978. Dutch 'language set.-
mons
ermons . which had still been
n
held at the church .once .a
month were discontinued,
and catechism classes ' and
monthly adult education
evenings were started.
Rev. Schouls, in his -
message to the congregation
in theircommemorative
anniversary book, saidi the
prayer at this time should be
"Lord,- make us all what we
ought to be." The pastor
said, "With this prayer must
also be the unfailing petition
that we, as' 'the Free . Re-
formed Church at ;Mitchell,
together and individually,
may always be a light to
others.'
