Why should Yon Ito to see the Blyth
Festival woduction of Child by James
Nichol?
Because it's good theatre, says Barn
Malkin, who PlaYs Peter Pure, the father of
the child lost in a snow storm for 21 days.
As opposed to the other three plays (This
Foreign Land, I'll Be Back For You Before
Midnight, and McGillicuddy's Lost Week-
end), which are "tightly focussed for the
audience", Child shows a "broader per.
spective of theatre," says Sam.
There are only sir Perfrnances of
Child, which opens July 31,
Child was written byNichol, who
wrote last season's PrOductiOn of OWell'
doline, the story of an eccentric woman in a
small town.
It appears that Child will be similar in
that it is steeped in human interaction and
emotion. Peter and Celia Dure, parents of
the lost child, are visited by their
neighbours. Dolly and Peter MacLeish,
and the two couples are Subsequently
storm -stayed.
Conflicts and feelings flare between the
four characters, caught in close quarters.
"Emotions are what gives the play its flesh
and blood," Sam says.
Sam is presently playing a myriad of
roles in This Foreign Land, the collective
that the actors wrote and performed with
the help of playwright Patricia. Mahoney,
Because he was part creator and
performer of multiple parts, in This Foreign
Land, Sam says he was "always looking at
it from two or three different angles," and
playing, characters that the audience never
got to know fully.
But in Child, he says, he is on stage half
the time, and the audience gets a "deeper
understanding of the man, his motives, -

They work well together, Sam says. He

there is "a stronger sense of community

Sam recently finished the, production
