WThy Should yo,. go to see the Blyth,
Festival ptetlectiee of Vhild by Jameg
Nichol?
Because it's good' theatre. says Sam
Malkin.who plays Peter Dure, the father of
the child lost in a snow storm for 21 days,
As opposed to the other three plays (Thi.*
Foreign Land, I'll Be Back For You Before'
Midnight, and McGillicuddy's Lost Week.
end), which are "tightly focussed for the
audience", Child shows a "broader pep.
spective of theatre," says Sam.
There are only six Perfermancea of
Child, which opens July 31.
Child was written by James Nichol, who
wrote last season's production of Gwen -
donne. the story of aneccentric woman in ti
small town.
It appears that Child will be similar in
that it is steeped in human interaction and
emotion. Peter and Celia Dure, parents of
the lost child, are visited by their
neighbours, Dolly and Peter, MacLeish,
and the two couples are subsequently
storm -stayed.
Conflicts and feelings flare between the
four characters, caught in close quarters
"Emotions are what gives the play its flesh
and blood," Sam says
Sam is presently playing a myriad of
roles in This Foreign Land, the collective
that the actors wrote and performed with
the help of playwright Patricia Mahoney.
Because he was part creator and
performer of multiple parts in This Foreign
Land, Sam says he was "always looking at
it from two or three different angles," and
playing characters that the audience never
got to know fully,
But in Child, he says, he is on stage half
the time, and the audience gets a "deeper
understanding of the man, his motives,
and his spirit,"
"The script just tears yoit PP ernetion*
Sam rit)%1; "riri hard t.olet t, _down to
doing that day after day."
Writer UMW; Nichol (=cies up about
twice *week. Sam saYs, to consult with the
actors about changes in the play, which has
never been performed before.
Kate Trotter as Celia Dure,. and Peter
Snell and Seana McKenna as the neigh.,
bouring couple, complete the cast .of four.
They work well together, Sam says, He
went to school, with. Kate, and because the
actors are in Blyth for the whole summer,
there is, "a stronger sense of community
within in the cast."
Sant recently finished the production
Children of Night at, the Warehouse of the
'Manitoba Theatre Centre in WinniPeg, He
worked. with Jack Blum, who lives in
Toronto and was in Blyth two years ago,
creating and performing After The Opera
at Theatre Passe Muraille. ,
Originally from Winnipeg and the son of
a doctor, Sam studied for two years at the
University of Manitoba, taking, agriculture
courses, hoping to combine a love for
animals and medicine intoa veterinary
career- .
But for various reasons, he gave up that
ambition, applied to Mime School in
Niagara -on -the -Lake, Was .accepted and
studied acting.
Sam later went on to the National
Theatre School in Montreal for three years,
and has been acting professionally for a
year.
Despite the drawbacks in theatre life
moving, never being sure of a job - he loves
acting. ^
"One day it's worth it, one day it isn't,"
he says, but "now that I've entered it,
there's nothing else I can do as Well."
