Predictions about the effect of the

situation have run rampant in the last few
weeks, reaching a crisis point just prior to.

the border.
Until such time when it is economically
feasible to turn to alternate forms of
energy, every consumer can do his or her
part to keep Canada on its feet.
' Rather than cripple your own pocketbook
and the country's coffer, try some of these
gas saving tips:
Slow down! Save your pennies, your
health and our resources. While doing so,
keep a light and steady foot on, the gas
pedal, avoid stop -and -go driving and
unnecessary acceleration.
If you are going to be gone from your
car for more than one minute, shut it off,
Idling for more than a minute wastes more
gas than it takes to re -start,

goy down in bad weather to save gas arid
accidents.
If you car will take the cheapest regular
gasoline, use it inateadOf premium. Using,
the higher ,priced fuel does not improve
mileage if your ear doesn't need it. Don't
be afraid to buy cheaper or off -brand gas,
there's nothing wrong with it, it's just the
refining surplus that oil companies sell to
independent retailers for three to eight
cents a gallon les than what they charge
for their own gas $MtionS•
FaithfullY keep your ear in good con-
dition. For the average car, a tune-up will,
increaSe your mileage by 6 per cent'. If
you've been neglecting your vehicle, it
could help! br as much as 20 per cent.
Check your tires, at least once a -month.
Tires lacking air are dangerous and
increase fuel eonsumptiOn. Even one
pound above recommended pressures will
reduce stress and give you a three per cent
saving Qn gas.
Avoid jumping from one stoplight only to
miss the next. Drive slowly through .
intersections. Never accelerate when going
