Pools Paradise is pne of those British comedies that depends on the stereotype of the English, as .the most eccentric lot who ever walked God's earth, The characters, from the maid; Ida.' to the regal Bishop of Lax are all slightly mad. or at least a little dotty, and this is what gives the play its appeal, - that and a number :af double entendres about sex, another hallmark of English humour. The first act. of Pools Paradise, which introduces us to the befuddled vicar Rev, Toop and his wife, an actress who has exchanged life on the stage for life with her penny pinching husband, was the weakest in the play, The act revolves around the vicar's ill-fated attempts to try and, economize by teaching the women in his household to turn off the lights when they leave a room. In the words of the exasperated preacher, "1'm trying to lighten our darkness; in church and darken our lightness at home." Trudy Cameron, an actress which makes the :Globe Theatre in Regina her home base, delivers a:consistent . performance as a transplanted actress who now . uses: a small: English village as her stageand all her skills to keep. a sense of humour about her husband's eccentricities, Stanley Cole$, the actor who originally created the character of Rev. Toop on the Grand Bend stage in See How They Runk is still stubbornly preaching the old-fashioned virtues in a world that has passed him by andno one, with the exception of spinster Miss Skillon, another traditional English figure of fun, takes, Rev: Toop's warnings or homilies very seriously,. Peter Milliard, who toured with the popular Toronto. Workshop Productions play Ten Lost Years, gives an appealing performance as the country bumpkin, Willie, the., tongue-tied choirboy who, is wooing Ida and.', is the "brains" behind the football pools bettin. g operation. SUPPORTING CAST_ . Other members of the cast include .Jennifer ;Austin as Ida, Jay MacDonald as the Bishop of Lax,veteran character actor Drew Russell as the visiting Rev. Arthur -Humphrey and Jenny Turner as Miss Sidillon. Although some of the supporting cast have a tendency to forget. their English accents in the excitement of the play's slapstick comedy, it's forgiveable since the audicnee.gets caught up in the action of the play.
