MICE GLOB
Pools Paradise. 4, play billed. ,as. a madcap British
,MITIedy, opened the Huron Country Playhouse season in
rand Bend lag week. The comedy, about an English
vicar Rev. Lionel Toop, who preaches against gambling in
all forms, and his wife Penelope, who plays the football
pools, wasn't the •strangest choice to open the season, but
it's a play which can't really offend anyone. Pools Paradise,
is one of those British comedies that depends on the
stereotype of the English as the most eccentric lot who,
ever walked God's earth. The characters, from the maid:
Ida, to, the regal Bishop of Lax are all slightly mad, or at
least little dotty, and this is what gives the play its. appeal.,
that and a number, of double entendres about, seta,
lish humour.

act of Poolsark of gParadise, which introduces us to,
the befuddled vicar Rev. Toop and his wife, an actress who,
has exchanged life on the stage for life with' her penny
pinching husband, was the weakest in the play. The act
revolves around the vicar's ill-fated attempts to try and,
economize by teaching the women in his household to turn
off thee lights when they leave a room, In the words of the
exasperated preacher, '`1'm trying to lighten our darkness
in church and darken our lightness at home,"

performance as a transplanted actress who- now uses a
small English village as her stage and all her skills to keep
a, sense of humour about her husband's eccentricities,
Stanley Coles, the actor who originally created the
character of Rev. Toop on the Grand Bend stage in, See
How They Run, is still stubbornly ,preaching the
old-fashioned virtues in a world that haspassed him by
and no one, with the exception of spinster. Miss Skillon,
another traditional . English figure of fun, takes Rev,
Toop'S warnings or homilies very seriously.
'Peter Milliard, who toured with, the popular Toronto
Workshop Productions play. Ten Lost Years, gives an
appealing performance as the country bumpkin Willie, the
tongue-tied .choirboy who is wooing • lda and is the
"brains" behind the football pools betting operation.
SUPPORTING CAST
Other members of the cast include Jennifer Austin as
Ida; :,Jay MacDonald as the `Bishop of .Lax, veteran
character actor Drew Russell as the visiting Rev. Arthur
Humphrey and Jenny Turner as Miss Skillon, Although
some, of the supporting cast have a tendency to forget their.
English accents in the excitement of the play's slapstick
.comedy, it's forgiveable since the audience gets caught up
in the action of the play. Although much of Phillip Kings

One of the play's strongest scenes_ is in the finals act
where the impatient Willie, Ida and Mrs. Toop wait its
suspense while the Bishop of Lax tries to read out the
week's football scores in his elegant,, churl y tones in the
midst of the surrounding confusion.
Although Pools Paradise officially: openedthe' season at
the playhouse, the opening, went off without any speelat
hoopla. making it a bit disappointing for the first night
audience. Every opening needs a little extra excitement to:
make it a special occasion,
Pools Paradise continues at the Huron Country
Playhouse until July 7. The next play on the summer
theatre's playbill is Angel Street, a drama about the well
laid plans of a husband attempting to drive his young bride
mad. Patrick Hamilton's play should prove popular with'.
audiences who, like to be pleasantly scared. Angel Street
runs from July 11 to July 2.1,
