Rather than ban the betties outright,,
Consumer Affairs Minister Allan. Lawrence
appealed to the manufacturers to recall
their containers and requested that retail-
ers remove .them from store shelves.
A ban under the Hazardous Products Act
would likely be challenged in court and
would be difficult t4 defend, he said,

The ,danger inherent in th e pop bottles.
was; brought tothe attention of the
Consumer and Corporate Affairs Depart-
ment by University of Toronto, engineering
professor David Barham. He found= the
narrow.necked bottles had a 100 Per cent
explosion rate.
Later tests by the department spewed:
that the 1.5 'litre bottles used by Pepsi,:
Seven -Up, Canada Dry, Pure Spring, 'Royal:
Crown. and Orange Crush were susceptible.
to explosion when tipped, ort to 'a hard'
surface.
A subsequent report stated that Coca'
Cola bottles, Sprite bottles, and Schweppes
bottles seem to have a, lower explosions
rate,, but whether the difference is:
.signit'icant was hard to determine from the
report.
That report concludes "When tipped on
a hard surface some bettle designs, and in
particular the narrow 'peck 1.5 litre
versions. are: very prone to explode. Glass

The fact that webave had Ari incidents
this area doesn't necessarily mean we are
immune. With summer here, soft drinks,
are a popular beverage. Two weeks ago a
Kitchener -Waterloo woman was seriously
Minted by> an exploding bottle while
Walking past a grocery .store "shelf:.
Beverages in cans. stint :unfortunately,
are at a disadvantage" in germs of
environmental conservation. The Ministry
of the Environment stipulates that cans can
only be displayed as; long as a similar size
of returnable .bottles are :displayedat the:
same time; The provincial ministry has not
offered refunds on returned' cans,, as the;
British Columbia government has doner
successfully it seems, for years.
Until such time as cans are deemed'
returnable and. acceptable in the environ,
mental sense, and bottles are deemed safe
and not potential bombs, the conclusion is
thesame: consumer beware.
Though the chance of explosion is, small,
it still exists. Please handle your summer
coolants with care,
