Supermarkets have been the subject of a
great deal of press coverage lately, with
pork being found in meat la6elled beef.
and Dominion :Food :Stores being fined

General rising meat prices make ,an
understanding of what you are buying and
how you are protected by law .expecially
important.
The: Food and Dreg Act'noW requires
that cutsof meat bear a standard Zabel' .on,
the package. The store can add its own, but
must display the regulation name as well.
In addition to a cut label.:a: packagee of
meat, fish or poultry packaged at the retail
level must show the date of that, packaging;
by thestore. A display sign is Also required
to be placed nearby, totell you how long
the product can be safely, stored in, your
refrigerator.
Any, .meat, fish: or poultry that has been,
frozen and thawed again before you .buy it,
must also indicate that fact. (Label should
read Previously. Frozen or Made From
Fresh and Frozen Portions.) By glancing at
the label or display, ,you can determent
whether the meat cornea to you fresh ot,
frozen.
Buying beef in bulk can be economical..
But remember that there is a difference:
between the hanging weight Of the earcass,
before the meat is cut, boned and: tnnmed,.
and. the .'weight ;after this process, which
can reduce the weight by 25 per cent.
The store. by law, is required to tell you,
if the price per pound of the rneat you buy
greater than the advertised price per
Pound, You must be informed if the meat is
upgraded, and the grade must be
identified if the meat is gradedThese
requirements• for buying in bulk apply fer,
all advertisements for beef ,Qr Meal;
weighing 25 pounds or more.
Greeedtleef also has regulations
governing its sale. Regular ground beef
can have :no more than a 30 per cent fat
content, medium: ground beef no more than
23 per cent, and lean ground beef no, mere
than 17 per cent. Hamburger midst be
labelled according to 'its category.
If you find yourself questioning, the
labelling or lack of it on a product, the
Consumer and Corporate Affairs office
suggests: that you should first. talk to the
retailer, If you are unhappy with the
response. they suggest that you write the
head office of the store. If you are still not
satisTed, ge to a consumer agency.

The...ummerpeople
-One of the bravest of all summer people
is the baseball umpire.
See himcrouch; see him peerthrough
his mask. Even through the face protector,
you can tell he's concentrating.
See him dodge the little white missile
travelling ninety miles an hour. Hear him
shout. "Bali one!"
See him crouch, watching, waiting. Here
it, comes again. See him • raise his arms;
hea. t firmly yell, "Strike two!"
Watch him ignore the boos on one side
and the cheers, on the other. He ' is
badgered, bothered, bumped, maybe even
bruised. Hear him put: "an end to •the
bickering with 'a stern, "Play ball!"
Hear him shout without hesitation,'
"Strike three! You're out!'
If an umpire is, at times, one of the most
unpopular summer people, the home run
king is one of the most popular ones.
Hear the crack of the bat; hear the crowd
go wild; watch him nonchalantly Make • his
home run, jogaround the bases.
Another popular stammer person is, the
,one behind the ice cream's coop«•Watch him
expertly scoop and swirl the creamy cold
delight; see • his deftfingers dip into the
nuts, See him sneak a lick whenhe thinks
no: one's ;looking.,
Yes. a popular person is the king :or
queen. of the cone, shake, sundae' and
banana split. Perhaps the only happier'
person 'is the one who gets to ear -the •
delicacies.
Another person who's :.always in demand.
is the one slaving over the backyard
barbecue,
Watch hint flip: the hamburg paddies
with precision timing; see him seasonthe
chicken parts with his secret barbecue
sauce; watch himshake the ketchup bottle
until his white apron is ,red -striped.
Hear him shoo away the pesky people'`'
who claim they're starving,
f-iear •the sizzle, the pop; smell the
aroma; can't you . almost taste the tender
hot meat? -
Summer people know how to.work hard,
how to play hard,, how to takeit easy .and,
how toenjoy summer, but kids are
`probably the ones who know how to get the
most out of summer: •
See them stampede for the door .on the
last day of school.
Hear .them cheer as they lunge toward
two' whole months of .summer .freedom-
baseball in the park, catch in the backyard;
the beach, a swimming`, pool, a lemonade
stand in front of their house, bicyle rides,
long nights of light, late night TV and .
• sleeping in every morning. .
Ah...the joys of summer people, kids
and adults alike.
If you think this column seems:. short or;
put together hurriedly, .you're right. The.
writer is one those lucky .summer people
about to set out on a' summer 'holiday. and I
haveto be ready yesterday.
