he was a son of Mrs. Mary
(Kennedy) Ducharme. of St.
Columban. and the late
August Ducharme. and
'farmed in Hibbert Township
allhis life.
He was a member of St.
Columban Roman Catholic
Church and was active in :the
former football club in St.
Columban. .
Surviving are his wife, the
former. Clara Jean Ryan
whom he married at Mount.
Carmel in 1955; two sons,
Allan and 'Murray; and one
daughter,, Denise, all :at
Koine; • two sisters, Mrs.
Cordon (Catherine). Staples,
d Seaforth, and Mrs. Ronald
(Rose) Marcy, of 117 Redford
Cres., Stratford; two brot-
hers; Thontast. of Thunder-
Bay,

The late Mr. Carpenter
was, born John Joseph Car-
penter/0 years ago in Dublin,
Ontario. He --was the sen of
the late John Joseph Carpen-
ter and Theresa Devereaux.
He resided in Chatham at
Thames Park Tower s North
and Victoria Avenue since
1931.
Surviving are his wife, the
former Helen Agnes Crich,
one, daughter lacy, Mrs,
Brethold: Carriere ., of St.
Mary's, three sons, William.'
J. of Chatham, James F. of
Tilbury and . Joseph • J. of
Guelph, one grandson Chris-
topher, -and ,_one sister, Mrs.
Teresa Reynolds of Seaforth.
The late Mr. Carpenter
graduatedfrom the Univer-
sity of Western Ontario and:

ham in 1931.. He; taught at
Chatham Vocational School,
taking time off during the
second World War for mili-
tary duty with the Canadian
Army. He was, a member of

lie was principal of Chat
ham Collegiate Institute from.
1959 to 1966 and principal of
Chatham -Kent secondary...
school until his retirement in
1971. He was a member of

celebrated at Our Lady of
Sorrows Church, June 12. by
Mr. Melady's son, Father
Thomas G. Melady, former
MSSB assistant superinten-
dent of religious education.
In his homily, Father
Melady described' his father
as a "pipe -smoking
theologian, a story -teller par
excelle nce, a firm and
loving father, a great
educator and a humanist
saint who will be missed by
many,"
Born in St: Columban,
Ont., Mr Melady came'' .to'
"He was not only respected
by his colleagues on council,
but by the city administration
as well. His death is a great
loss to the community."
The late Ald. Carpenter
:served on; virtually every
