A lesson in people
BY LISE GCNBY'
Two weeks of travel in Britain. is , alar

It's difficult to do. London; justice in seven
days. After walking the streets and cobbled
mews from 9.:00 a.m. until midnight. you.
stumble intoe bed with the realization that
there is a city out there you've hardly even.
began u to know.
London. is , a' ventre ifvariety, front
Buckingha{n Palace to the outdoor antique
markets: - •
While Toronto is sleek, and modern,
'London is. 'like a history book, . complete
with the Tower. of. London,- where both
Queens and traitors once walked.
The .• Beefeaters at the, Tower on the
Thames know the drama that is London;
More than tour guides, they are practiced
oral historians and actors as well.
Voices ringing. they chronicle the deaths
Of Henry the Eighth's wives on the scaffold
for a hushed crowd.
But London is more It's a busy, friendly
place; The famous two-tiered, buses and.
black . cabs keep the streets plugged with

If you're wealthier than I am,:lou can
buy a designer dress at Harrod's Depart-
ment Store and },isir the cathedral -like food

fruit; and flowers.
Travel! tips
If you're braver than 1 am, you can pick
up thelatest punk rock fashions in the
shops on King's Road.
And then escape to the beautiful green
and, flowered gardens and parks in and •
around the centre of the city.
North of London lies the land', of the
Scots, once scourged with the turmoil of
rebellions, now a mecca for tourists in.
searth of tartans and abandoned castles:
We drove along in a rented car, eating..
oatcakes and shortbread, while staring out
at the multi -coloured highland hills not yet
purple 'with the bloom of heather,
If geography is an indication of a unique
group of people, then Scotland' and'
England are one,
not English gardens are
soon replaced by high hills and green -
glens. The language changes, the Scottish
burr replacing the round English .accent,
' Scotland has a history and legends of her
own, A cruise down the Loch Ness found it
untroubled by its monster, "Nessie,'"
From main n street of Edinburgh you. can
see thecity's castle rise' as though
growing from the rocks.
But in one respect the people sof the
island are identical', They are •frtendl.and
helpful, longsince accustomed to the ebb
and flow of .tourists. To me and to all
visitors they give their homes as guest
houses, their smiles of welcome, and the
richness of history that is their heritage.
