This week marks the end of another year
of, doing homework and studying for tests

'at least for highschool students. It's also a
good time, to review the athletic achieve-;
ments of those who have representedtheir.
schools, in this case Seaforth District High.
Such a • review -gook place last 'Friday
morning at SDHS, inthe form of the annual
awards assembly: As was expected, the
names of Nielson and , Underwood pre-
dominated.
The Sills Cup for the most outstanding
male athlete of the 'year ,was presented to
Johnny. Nielsen. Naturally; Kathy Larone,
the grade 9 student who won the gold
medal for badminton in all of Western
Oritario, received the award for the mos;
outstanding female athlete
John Cairns, who spent much of the time
sprawled on the floor or "smashing into
walls trying;to keep the ball ,inbounds.for
his'„team, wort the • most valuable player
award for seniorboys' basketball. The
entire girls' team won the most valuable
players award for senior girls' basketball.
Mike Flannagan was' chosen the most
valuable player, for the, junior boys' soccer
team, while Dennis Nielsen won the team
spirit and leadership' award for the seniors.
Dennis was also chosen to attend an
athletic leadership camp this summer for
athletes from all over Ontario,
Mark Underwood was honoured by
being chosen 'the most dedicated male
track and field athlete, even though a leg;.
injury stopped him from competing in any
meets past WOSSA. .
A similar award for the , females was.
given' to Linda Blake.. •.
The most improved athlete of the year
was Mary Thompson, the grade 9 girl who
won first in discus at both the Huron -Perth
and WOSSA track meets,
As well, Mary won the rookieof
the year ward for junior girls basketball.
She was also presented with an award for
being a member of any , championship
competition, as were Kathy terrine, Mark
Underwood, Dave Underwood and Johnny
Nielsen. •
Other awards included; most consistent
player, Sr. girls volleyball, Dianne Wilson;
Sr. boys' volleyball, 'Marc :Robinet; team
spirit and ,leadership; Jr:. girls', volleyball,
Mary JaneNigh; Jr, boys' volleyball, Neil
Johnston; boys' low gross in golfing, Jim.
Parkinson; enthusiastic competitiveness in
badminton; Darrell Dietz and Mary
Verberne; :general athletic contribution
throughout the school year, Susan Nigh,
• The ,following ,.students were,. given
awards for competing on three : inter-
scholastic teams for three years: Dennis
Nielsen, Marc Robinet, Denise Albert, Pia:
Marcussen and John Cairns.' •
Over all, 1978-79 was a fairly good year
for SDHS. Johnny Nielson,:,Mary Thome- •
son and KathyLarone`all won gold medals
at both Huron -Perth and WOSSA, in their
respective sports, • Mark Underwood: was'
eliminated from further competion by a leg'
injury, but brother Peter managed to go all
the way to the Ontario finals, as did Johnny
and Mary- Johnny won at this OFSSA --
meet, placinghim first in the province.

The next couple,' of months may be a
holiday from classroom work, but for any of.
the athletes who are trulyy interestedin
sports; it will be a period of rest from
competition. However, most of them: wil
use their spare time to :practise and
improve, asthey do throughout the year.

an Ontario Cup Game at the
S.D.II.S. field. The girls
need your support and also
someone to help coach the
team. Bradley Finlayson has
been assisting the ;girls but
would welcome added help:

city teams.
