A barrage of questions from 12Q Grade 7 and 8 students at Seaforth Public School was directed at politicians from the four levels of government Friday after aweek of research' and preparation for theschools' Government' Day. Principal Paul Carroll said the aim of the day was to show students how politics works. "It is important as responsible .citizenS • that we should learn how our governments operate," he said. Among those who, spoke at government day were Jack (L-M.L.A.-Huron Middlesex) who spoke on his role at Queen's. Park. Murray Gaunt ,(L-M.L.A.-Huron. Bruce) discussed how the provincial govern. ment works. Rokert McKinley, Conservative M•P. for Huron in the last Parliament, talked about his role in the federal government, • Seaforth's Mayor discussed the composi. tion and function of the town council, and McKillop Township Reeve Allan Campbell. and Tuckersmith Township Reeve Ervin Sillery spoke .on township and county wuncils* Seaforth's clerk JameS. Crocker explained how he co-ordinates the town's.departments and Huron's. Hill Hanly spoke on the county's departments and how they function. There also • was a Huron riding all candidates session when. McKinley, Liberal. 'Candidate Graeme Craig and NDP candidate Moira Couper discussed federal government and elections. Keith McClure. a Grade 8 student summed up the session as "interesting." And the answers to the pupils' questions? Well Gaunt, MPP; says he makes about $20,000 a year plusexpenses; nuclear power plants are built close to people because Ontario Hydro says they are safe; and provincial premiers have a lot otinfluence on the prime minister witness that as an election issue in • the current federal campaign.
