The 'professional leagues •are well: into the swing of things,; so naturally local ball has begun too. Baseball comes by many different names;' such as hardball, softball; slow - pitch, :etc., and although equipment and the size of the .field may vary, it all boils down to the same thing: hitting a ball with a bat, then trying to run around a diamond shaped, field without being caught by an opposing player who has the ball.. Of course this sportis not just that simple. Nor is it boring, as the above description may have indicated. All you' have to` dotoprove this is to -go to the Seaforth Optimist park . on almost -'any evening, and sit and watch a game or two. Sunday and Monday evenings are reserved for the men: This is when the. Seaforth ' Recreational League, formerly.' called the Industrial League, playsits game; Each night, two games are played, one starting at 7 p.m. and the other at 8.:30 pm. In this manner each of the eight teams sees action once a week. This .fastball league is open to men over the age of 18. At the beginning of each season, a draft is held for allnew players wishing to enter the league, or for players wishing, to change teams. As in the major leagues, the bottom ` team from ^ the previous year gets the first -draft choice, and the top team gets the last. Usually' there are from 12 to 15 players on a team. A second draft was held on Wednesday evening, after each team had played two games.' Because this league is for the enjoyment of the'players, anyone on one of the teams may not play•in;any other league. This wav, hydrangea plant . was 11.1r.. Manor. Phil. Bissett and family. of Goderich Mr., and Mrs. Jack Ca iter visited with the former's'. mother Mrs. Mary Carter. Visiting Miss Bessie Davidson were !Mrs, Edith Dunlop and 'Mr. Stanley 3ilien. Mrs. Isabel Scott visited with Mr: William Scott. Mrs: June,Lampton of Toronto visited her father Dr.' E. Sadlier. Visiting with Miss 'Ethel McClure was her. sister Mrs, 'Agnes McClinchey. Friday ` afternoon bingo, was held with 'Mrs. Veronica Etue and. Mrs. Isabel Rau as 'volunteers assisting- Win- ners were Mrs- R. McClure, Miss Isobel Lambie,. Mr: James Tatulis and Mr. ]Erle .' Daw. the sport _ remains . recreational. • • The league was first formed about ten years ago, and although the quality of play, now is fairly equal to what it was then, the facilities used 'have improved greatly: Originally, the games were being played either at the, public school or the 'Lion's, Park, though neither had proper diamonds ventually, as the Optimist club improved, i park at the southern. edge of town, the ames were moved thereNow the park h s a good diamond and field, as well as n spectator seating, a snackbar,. and washrooms. Probably the most important change made this year was the umpiring. Instead of using local "umps," all of the league's .officiating is done by O.A,S.A. card -hold- ing umpires belonging to the ' Goderich Umpires' association: According to Bob. Beuttenmilier, president of the league, this change has made the games . fjister and better, improving them immensely. In this season, two tournaments are planned. The first is for the league's own teams only, and will be held from June 16 to 19. The other is an invitational for four of the local teams, as well as several from other leagues. It is scheduled for sometime in July. Also, a representative team of the. - best players in the league willplay a three. game series against'a team from Seaforth's sister city • West Branch, Michigan. This series will be .field in Seaforth the last .- weekend in. July, in conjunction with the;. International Olympic Games between the two towns: As far as organized "ball in Seaforth goes, Mr. Beutten hiller says, "It's gone for ten years and 'I don't seeany reason why it,. can't gp another ten at least.", Plat/ hatll ernaining SSIG 26 oz. ea. + dep... •.••••••••••• .26 oz. 12 bottles and lli For your Central Air Conditioning Needs ,Contact' TOM DUIZER Plumbing & Heating Londii born 523-4359 Archie's.
