loony comic strip about a
family of down-and-outers
who: were so short on every-
thing that their little boy
slept in a bureau drawer.
Well, things may not be
quite as bad around your
house, but many growing
familieis do feel the pinch of
space . , . especially when
the time comesfor young-
sters to have rooms of their

psychologists, it should be a
place that offers lots of
stimulation ::colors, pat-

light and shadow. All of

development specialist Jean
Piaget, environments that
stimulate the senses also
stimulate the brain .... so a
child's room . really plays an.
important part in his/her
growing up.
Making rom or
rooms for children is
basically a matter of find-
ing room.It couldbe a case
of converting the attic or en-
closing a porch. But, space
is what you make it, and
how you make it, You can
divide a large room into two
perhaps, with a sliding
partition, maybe with a stor-
age wall. One handyidea:
put a stack of cubes down
the middle of a large room„
with some facing one side,
some the other. That way,
you gain two "rooms" —
and lively storage for both.
Thrift hint: build your own
cubes out of chipboard, then
paint or cover than to make
the mostof the. decor. For
example, you could cover
the cubes in wallcoverings to
matchthe walls, and paint
their insides in a bright con

In keeping with this<ban-

-- it's time todecorate the
laundry room accordingly
—with .bright colors and ac-

carpet as attractive as it is
practical - carpeting muf-

appliances in operation.
Now go on to select a

Bringing in'a bit of art can
be fun too as well as
bright throw -pillows, plants

A final tip from the ex-
