Moto cross:
noisy but fun
Engines roared aseach rider revved'
up his bike. Ahead ofthem is a hardride
through slippery mud and; over high jumps.
When it's all over,: the men will be tired,,
dirty and perhaps bruised.
The sport is motocross. Surest s noisy and
dirty, but if you were to ask any of the
hundreds of riders and spectators, they
would all tell you that it's fun.
Motocross is a high endurance race
around a specially groomed track. , the
bikes are specially built to give "maximum
power to get up hills or through mud holes.
Theyaren't as fast as street bikes, but
;they'll easily take a ten foot jump.
Lights are absent on these motorcycles,
as -are street -legal mufflers. They're
strictly for off-road riding.
Motocross has become a big business
over the last few years. All the bike
manufacturers have their own 'factory'
racing teams which go to all the motos to
compete. .Quite often ' these sponsored
P . p
teams win, but not always, A local rider
who knows the track . can , have an
advantage.,•
It takes a lot of money for an individual
to race. First there is the initial cost of the
bike. and ridinggear. Then of course there
are entry feesgasoline. and And the bike
has to be transported, either in a truck or
van or .on a trailer.
Purses (cash prizes) in small local races
are usually the same: small. It is because of
this that most unsponsored riders compete,
mainly_ for the excitement.
The Seaforth area is fortunate to have
two good motocross tracks within driving
distance. One is just north-east: of Walton.
It takes advantage of good natural terrain
to provide an excellent course
The other is at Hully Gully near. Varna.
This well known track is more man made
than is. Walton"s.
The first moto of the season in this area
,was. held at Hully Gully last Sunday;
'afternoon. The 1- "Super Digger'
Motocross, sanctioned by the Canadian
Motocross . Association, started ` Hully
Gully's sixth season of sanctioned
motocross racing.
To help promote motocross "in'this' area,
Randy Collins, General Manger at Hully
Gully, has set up'a house league system°for
riders. The idea. is to providesafe,
well -organized` • development and coin-,
petition for various levels of rider age and .
ability withouta large financial outlay..
Hopefully it will parallel minor hockey or
baseball
. A few local riders do compete in motors
around Ontario. A couple of promising
racers from this area are Chris Lee from
Walton, and Wayne Ryerson of Clinton.
Lee a member o f the :Maitland -:Dirk Riders
Associaton, is becoming known, for racing
in the expert classes Ryerson was the 1978
: Op'tario High. Point Senior.
It takes a lot of people to , run a moto.
Announcers, starters. flag' -men and C.MA...
official' . are all i nOrtant. The bikes'
themselves often need mechanics to repair
them, and of course aisponsor is: necessary
to provide the purse: `
However, the spectator makes It all
' .possible in the long run. If no one watched
the races, then no one _ould sponsor
them.'
There are two good tracks near Seaforth
and a high grade of racing isn't hard to
find. So go to a moto. this summer.. You
might be surpised at the excitement that
you'll -experience.
