On Monday afternoon a
trip to the ,'sugar -bush was
:planned. Eight of the re -
idents availed themselves of
the opportunity of seeing
maple-syrupbing made.
They went to James Mt -
man's bush, north of
Winthrop where the
process was in' action. He
uses the 'pan' method. Mr.
Axtman explained this
method and answered
questions. I heard'
enthusiastic comments of the
group when they. returned.
The climax was reached
when each had a drink of the
bot sap in its first stage on
the way to mape-syrup.
Feelings of nostalgia were
awakened in „ge of former
years, when my sister Ella,
and 1 spent a holiday at
Varna in maple -syrup time
with our grandparents We
bad a memorable day when
my twin uncles were
Sap in their bush about a milel
back Of the barn.
It was exciting to watch the
sap boiling down to syrup in
the big black.irOn kettle over.
an open fire. It rained a little
but our spirits were not
—dampened as our uncles
made a tent of tall slabs with
the bark oni" a real Indian
tepee. With our uncles in
charge we had a lot of fun
taking pictures.
My sister and 1 were
wearing our kilts of the red
Stewart plaid which father'
had brought from Scotland in
one of the metal trunks which
he usually brought home well
laden with gifts for us all. I
remember well. We would be
abOut eight Years old,
