**There is nothing; bad that could be
worse"—that was hiS•-•SIWIL
•Among the many fine qualitieS my dad
PoSsesSed', optimistn was one of his trtiAt,
• When he was jeft to raise six kids on biS
own he Said "At least they are all Old
enough to dress thetnselves, if there was a
baby td be licked, There is nothing bad
that could be worse.”
Indeed he wouldn't have 'been licked,
He'd have put the baby on the seed drill
with him if he had to --he'd have found a
•'Nay* made it.
• Years later, the call came o. give the
doctor permission to amptttate my brot-
her's leg. After he hung up the phone he
sat on the kitchen chair and cried. His
exact words were ""The poor buggar didn't
desetve that." He straightened up and
said, -At least they an save his knee,
there is nothing bad that could be•worse."
I, don't know hqw many ears we wrecked
between us--twofor me—The air might be
blue when welold him but he'd say At
least you weren't hurt, there is nothing bad
that could be worse.' Youdon't have to
Look very far to find someone worse off,
he'd add on such occasions,IJ
• When 1, was teaching `away from home r
managed to get my pride and joy, two front
teeth, knocked out, .1 phoned to tell
him—Response--- "it could have been
your eye, nothing • bad that could- be
worse.'"
When my own kids or friends come te

One of the emotionally inherited traits I've

fall back op: but two hard working hands.
his own intrinsic toughness, and the will to
find a Way mak:e it, because he lotted, us
and w•anted to set an example.
Maty times he WAS drisen, to his knees,
because there was no place else to go.
Even his prayers wert short and to the
trinunings.
He wash loyal to .a high standard of
conduct and had the courage to sad "'no"

He's mellowed now in ;the winter of his

Lifehanded. him cards that it took a really
