The three-day broomball
tournament' this weekend at
the Seaforth' Arena proved•to'
be a "tournament of upsets"
according to Janet Graham..
one of the event's 'organi-
zers.
The major upset was that
none of the men's teams
the Seaforth ' Broomball
League made it to the tourna-..
meat finals. However, Miss
Graham said there was a
better quality of 'ladies'
broombail displayed in this
year's tournarhent than in
the match last year.
The three-day tournament,,
Which kicked` off Friday night,
with a match between ' the:.
Seaforth Junior Farmers and.
Bamberg. attracted : 34
teams. There were 20 men's
teams and 1,4',ladies' teams
competing in the 'tourna-
ment.
The 'Seaforth Queen's
Hotel ladies' team were
runners=up in the race for the
ladies` championship. The
Seaforth team was defeated
in their final. game, 5to;0. by
the powerful Green. Machine
team from the Kitchener
area. Janet Graham said this
is the fourth :year in a row
that the Green Machine have
emerged as tournament.
champions, .
The men's championship
was wan by theBambergteatn.
who defeated St. Clements
by .a 3-0 score. .
Both these teams play in
' the St. Clements' League in
the Kitchener area.
Miss Graham said the
Chisethurst Ladies team
made it to the tournament
semi-finals, only to go down
to a 4-0 defeat by the Green
Machine.
The . Seaforth Junior
Farmers' Ladies team also
played against the Queens
Hotel team in an exciting,
sudden death overtime'gante
which saw :the Queens' team
win by a 2-1 co_ttnt.
Although, the weather
Sunday aftcriirion was hardly
conducive to' driving. Miss
Graham said -the only, change'
in, the tournament wag that
game's; ran from 15 to 20
minutes behind •• schedule.
None of the games had to be
cancelled due to the weather.
The tournament attracted'
a number of spectators. Miss
•Gr+aharn said brooniball is a
"fast growing sport" in the
arca and the Seaforth Broom -
ball League is now the big-
gest league ill the area.
There are 1.9 tcatns in the
local league, compared to the
St. Clements' League front
the Kitchener area which has.
about 14 teams.
The committee who were
responsible for organizing
the Seaforth totirnanlent'in-
eluded ' Janet Gtaltam, Reno
Koikntatt, Elgin Dcariiig. and
Marg McCauley.
Despite the upset of the
local mens' . teams, Miss
Graham saidthe three day
. event proved to be "a decent
tournament!"
