Teens need info to avoid pregnancy
BY PATRICIA OMER
There has been a lot of talk lately about
Susan White's article about teenagers and
the double standard on sex. There have been
a lot of opinions given concerning this topic
through both conversations and letters to the
editor. All of these opinions are very
reasonable and it isn't hard to understand
people's concern about such an important
In last week's paper it was super to see
Mrs. Ryan include a positive attitude in her
letter to the editor. It seems that tqg many
people stereotype today's teenagers in a
negative way.
Believe it or not, there are a lot of really
good kids in our society. Unfortunately.
people seldom speak of good kids. Unfor-
tunately. many people would rather hear
about teen pregnancy. a juvenile deliquent
or teens who are high on drugs rather than a
teenager who helped someone shovel a
sidewalk or who held a door open for an
elderly lady. Hearing nice things about
teenagers isn't nearly as interesting as
hearing the bad things.
TEENS ARE STEREOTYPED
When an adult hears of a teenager who
does something wrong. often he (the adult)
stereotypes all teenagers as doing the same
thing. This is waere Susan White's article
comes into play.
Many readers saw Susan's article as a
promotion for teenage sex. Those readers
saw the article as an invitation to teenagers
to get birth control so they can engage in
sex. This is not the case.
The article simply suggested'to teenagers
where they could get birth control if they
were already sexually active.
The article also educated a lot of teenagers
and adults. Many people were unaware of
the Huron County Health Care Unit in
Clinton. By being familiar with this Clinic.
young girls may find out the information
about sex that they may not already know.
Information may be found about different
types of contraception, the risks and possibly
the expense of contraception. These are
important factors for a girl to know even if
she has no intention of becoming sexually
active yet.
There are so many things that teenagers
must know about. When our parents were
teenagers there was little. if any discussion
about veneral disease, AIDS. or herpes.
These were seldom heard about until just a
kw years ago. Now. these are very 'real'
problems that people should bg well
informed of.
By telling a teenager of these diseases you
are more likely to discourage him/her away
from sex than encourage it. By being aware
of these risks a teenager can see that there is
a big responsibility in sexual intercourse; a
responsibility that many teenagers may not
be ready to make.
SEX IS BIG RESPONSIBILITY
Another thing that teenagers must be
educated about is the high rate of teen
pregnancies. Many young couples have
married because they 'grad to". Premarital
sex has always happened and it still does
today.
However. teen mothers now are finding
other options to what ways available years
ago. Before the couple would be married.

CHRISTMAS CHEER
BY FRANCES FORD
It was a December night
Everything was covered in white
1 wished upon a star I could see
That you were here alone with me
Christmas cheer wherever you may be
You will always be here with me
1 hear choir members sing
As 1 listen to sleigh bells ring
Everytime I dream of you in my eye sight,
I feel warmer than the firelight
So 1 drink a toast to you and 1
As I think of you tonight
Wherever you may be at this time
1 hope you are feeling just fine

To celebrate this joyous year
But until you are I will be a far

That everything will stay pretty and white
And that you will be with me soon one night.
easy. Establishing a home. dealing with
expenses and working as well mutt be a
strain on the best matches. Add pregnancy
and a rushed wedding and the difficulties
multiply. Life would be even harder for
newlyweds who are inexpeneaced, unedu-
cated and not too sure they 'Wanted to be
married in the first place.
It's hard to say what's thebest thing for a
pregnant teenager to do. Some teens do get
married for the sake of the child. In my
opinion, unless you marry for love (not just
to give the child a name). in these times that
marriage probably will not work.
MARRIAGE WITHOUT LOVE
DOESN'T WORK
Some teenage girls decide to have an
abortion. This is a highly debatable subject
and 1 suppose it depends totally on the girl's
morals and circumstances.
Many teen mothers have the baby and
then give the baby up for adoption. This is a
good idea in the sense that there are
thousands of families eager and waiting to
adopt a child and give it a good home. The
child would then be loved, comforted and
supported by people who truly canted and
could provide for it. A single teen mother
may not be able to do all or any of this.
However. there is another side to the
adoption alterdative. After carrying her baby
for nine months and delivering the baby, a
mother could become very attached to that
child. 1t would be very difficult to make the
decision of having the child adopted after a
bond between mother and child had been
made.
Also. after putting the child up for
adoption the mother may always wonder
where that child is.
PREGNANCY MEANS SOUL-SEARCHING

BY
rcveatiag there is no
because there is nondecision to be made.
Knowledge and the tote of contraception Is
the key.
Information about contraception should be
available whether or not a teenager is
sexually active. In fact. the best form of birth
control is a good talk with parents who will
give open and thorough information about
sex. By having a thorough knowledge of
these things. the teenager may decide
he/she is not ready to begin a sexual
relationship.
Addressing these issues in public only
adds to everyone's knowledge. Being
offended if "sex' is put in the papers. does
not solve the problem of teen sex. We cannot
ignore it by pretending that it isn't there.
LET'S TALK ABOUT IT
Not all teens are sexually active. Many are
,virgins. But those who are not virgins should
not become parents unless they are ready.
The newspaper has printed letters that
depict parents concern and opinions. This
column reflects a teenager's concern and
opinion. Teenagers are equally concerned
about teen pregnancy and many share the
same concern and opinions as adults.
A few years ago, a meeting was held at the
high school that brought teens and their
parents together to discuss drinking and
driving. The police chief was there and a lot
was learned at that meeting. Drinking and
driving and accident -related deaths were a
real concern that summer.
Maybe. a meeting should be held about
this equally -important topic. People have
some valid opinions regarding teenage sex
and we should talk about them. What is your
opinion?
