psychologist at the University' of Waterloo's
' Renison College, think its hecause the
television and print media teach *us as
children toregard the .sged as, decrepit,
useless people.
Dr. Towler was awarded 525,000 from the
Humanities and Social Selene Research
Council in 1980. to conduct a. study of 500
children's books and 50 of the top TV shows
kids like to watch. Three years, thousands of
pages. and reams of videotapes later Dr.
Towler has come to the conclusion that the
media practice aggeism (prejudice against the
aged) almost universally.
"The books and Programs . we studied
convinced me the people, who control the
media. both print and television, consistent-
ly present old people as unidimensional,
uninteresting, and withopt Status or dig-

"This is unfortunate because we're
iraininga whole generation of young people
to think of the old as dull and useless. These
same young people wilibe the future policy
makers dealing with an increasingly aging
population who ~won't be content to sit in
footing chains and stop living." • •-
Stattstics•C-anada estimates at least a 100
per cent increase in the over -65 age bracket
,in the next 50 years, which will' leave a
population comprising more than 20 per cent
senior citizens, as contrasted with the
current 10 per cent.
• CHANGES'
"Book publishers and television pro-
ducers have failed to reflect this change in
society," says Dr. Towler, "Old age and
dying are topies that must`be addressed in
children's television and literature so
children can develop healthy attitudes to the
.pew demographic reality.' -
