Education and information concerning
water and soil conservation is an important
part of the Upper Thames River Conservation
Authority's Difiyse Spurce Control Program.
Special tours are just one melons by which
U.T.R.C.A. attempts to increase the aware-
ness of soli erosion and water quality
problems that exist within the watershed, as
well as illustrating what can be done to solve
them. On Sept. 13.15, U.T.R.C.A. hosted a
tour for the Quebec Environment and
Agricultural Ministries to view various
manure handling and erosion control sites in
the Upper Thames watershed:-
UnfPortttnately, no soil conservation pro-
grams exist in Quebec, where there has been
serious water quality problems in the St.
Lawrence lowlands. Although conservation
tillage has been adopted to some extent,
technical and financial assistance regarding
erosion control structures and manure
storages are non-existent although strict
regulations are in effect. Aware of the work
carried out in the Thames and the on-going
Water Quality study in the Pittock watershed
(north of Woodstock), the Quebec visitors
were very anxious to see control practices
used by farmers.
During the tour, farmers explained their
operations and the advantages and disadvan-
tages associated with their particular manure
system. Some farmers indicated that careful
management of liquid storages and spread-
ing is required because of compaction of the
land by heavy trucks and plugging of tiles
caused from over saturation of the soil from
manure.
Spray irrigation of liquid manure must be
done carefully so that manure saturation of
the soil .011d subsequent runoff does not
occur. Careful Consideration of farm expan-
sion in the future is also necessary so that the
size of the storage can 'handle the volume of
farm manure.
A visit to various erosion control sites and
drain stabilization sites concluded the tour.
Here they examined work completed on the
Meisner Drain, Reynolds Creek,and several
other private erosion control sites in Oxford
County. Hoping to initiate a soil erosion and
Custom farm
water quality program similar to• ours, t}je
Quebec Ministries staff expressed their
thanks for a successful tour which provided
them with plenty of useful information.
In order for soil and water conservation to
become more readily accepted. displays,
slide presentations, technical literature and
public tours are provided by U.T.R.C.A. The
success and acceptance of UTRCA programs
• has led to a 4 -fold increase in requests for
erosion control assistance since 1980.
Survey questionnaires will be mailed by
mid-October to custom operators in Ontario.
The annual survey provides information on
rates for various custom operations to
farmers and custom operators.
Custom operators are encouraged to
complete and return the questionnaire to
G.A. Fisher, O.M.A.F., Box 726, Chatham.
N7M SLI. New custom operators can obtain
a copy of the questionnaire from Mr. Fisher.
Summary results of the survey will be
available in February from O.M.A.F., Box
159, Clinton, NOM 1LO.
