fashion' attractive Christmas novelties. All

to the day, as were the kitchen committee of
tvtrs. Arthur Smale, Mrs. Ross Smale and
Mrs. Harvey Dow.
A short business meeting, which included
announcements and correspondence as well
as the naming of a nominating committee
brought the program to a close.

Early grant for Optimism Place
Perth County Council has extended a
helping hand to Optimism Place.
The Perth County home for battered
women and their children sent a request for
financial assistance to the Oct. 13 county
council meeting.
In budget 'preparations earlier this year,
council had approved giving a grant of
$3,000 to Optimism Place for this year.
Clerk -treasurer Jim Bell pointed out it is
county policy to give out all grants during
the month of December after the county has
received its final requisition from the -14
municipalities.
"1 wouldn't, like to see a precedent set,"
said Mr. Bell, referringto the advancing of a,.
grant. He suggested that it be specified that
any advance would be for 1983 only.
Elea township Reeve Glynn Coghlin said
he wasn't in favor of giving the whole grant
immediately and at first suggested half of
the $3,000 be sent. He later reduced that
figure to 25 per cent or $750 which was
approved by the majority of council.
Only Listowel Reeve Elsie Karges was
opposed to advancing a portion of the grant
because, she said, "rules are rules".
In other business, council:
Named Reeves Glynn Coghlin and Ron
Denham to sit on a local advisory board for
Canada Works project with Ross McPhail of
Hibbert Township as the alternate;
Empowered its negotiating committee to
negotiate salaries with county employees
and to bring back a recommendation within
the provincial guidelines which have not yet
been set.
