' •Councillors decided AO refer, the matter to its special building committee which ,wiU consider the cost of enlarging storage space by adding d second level to•the back half of the main floor and other' alternatives, including finding out if Mitchell is interested in housing a branch office. Listowel Reeve Elsie Karges referred to the age old concern that the majority of county services are housed in Stratford. "My position is that we are collecting taxes from everyone in Perth County but we are not providing this service (archives) to everyone in the county," commented Reeve Karges. • She noted the county is paying 57 per cent of the archives budget, which is based on per capita, yet there is only a branch office in Listowel. The branch office opened last year during Reeve Karges' term as warden. When she was named warden, Mrs. Karges indicated two of her.ggoals were to establish branch archives offices in' Listowel and Mitchell. The additional space is to house school records, but Mrs, Zarge; Wi4t if Money Is Spear t9 oped anhther br nOtkoff ce. Mitchell ndlarea school records could be housed there. It was sug$ested that former Stratford contractor Sato 1.ough1ln, Row .of Tweed, Ontario, but who Is still doitlg work for the county, be asked for an estimate on the project. Clerk -treasurer Jim Bell said Mr. Loughrin had earlier given an estimate of 530,000 to S40,000 fpr adding a second level. Warden Jethn said added that the contractor had said the archives building is" structurally sound and could handle the weight of the addition. Elmo Township Reeve Glynn CoghlieSaid ' he would like to.know Mitchell's position on an archives being located in the town, He noted any decision by council would be premature without feedback from the town. "We have discussed it," said Mitchell Reeve Jim Spence, adding, "1 can't make a strong recommendation at this time." Reeve Coughlin also added that the better alternative is to have a branch office in the county, "No matter 'how much space they (Stratford archives) have, they'll need more," said the Elma Reeve. Downie Township Reeve Calvin Innes, who initially suggested the matter be turned over to the special building committee for a recommendation, suggested the committee bring in "firm figures", for any of the alternatives mentioned. Vacation Bureau visits council There was no hand held out for. money. ' The Stratford and Area Visitors and Convention Bureau just came to tell Perth County Council what it is they do. General manager of the VCB Leo Morningstar and vice-chairman Joan Leslie - Chase spoke at county council's Oct. 13 session on the "exciting project".• Mrs. Chase, c,vner-operator of the Leslie Cheese House in Stratford, acknowledged that Mr. Morningstar had been before council previously to request financial assistance and had come . away empty handed. This time they were just "letting the people in the county know what we (VCB) are trying to do," said the vice-chairman.
