There are approximately 900,000 asthma- tics in Canada, and almost one-third of these are children. Asthma restricts the activities of adults'and children alike and statistics reveal that adults lose approximately 500,000 work -days, while children miss school at a rate of 600,000 "school loss days each year". To understand the feeling of a severe asthma attack, try clapping a hand tightly Briffihoi over your face until you struggle for breath; until your chest heaves, and your heart pounds from fear and lack of oxygen; until your lips turn blue. Asthma is one of the most dramatic of lung conditions because during an attack the asthmatic struggles for breath and loud wheezing noises can be heard.. Physicians can expect 21/2 million visits each year from patients with asthma . -Costs, for physiciahs' Sei•Vices and hospit'ali ation are tremendous, bat in addition to these costs is an estimated 22 million for drugs and bronchodilators; steroids 21/2 million, with the4 over-the-counter asthma remedies pur- chased at a rate of four million dollars. Lungs Are For Life Week is designed to create an awareness of good lung health and the educational programs conducted by the Lung Association throughout Ontario.
