Dougherty came back to us after a year in Exeter because of a promotion to Commercial Director. Inomparing schools, he feels that S.D.H.S. has bet- ter school spirit and fewer problems because of the smaller number of students. However we"donot have the technical- area that Exeter has,'The sentestef system is new to him because he left before it was instituted. 'He really has no prefer- ence in schools and likes both Exeter and Seaforth equally. Mr. 'Dougherty is the father of 3: Heather 25, who is married; Randy, 23, who is single arid Paul, 19, who is single and lives at home. His hobbies include fishing, boating; computers, downhill skiing, accounting and coaching cross-country. Mr. Dougherty will have taught 14 yrs. in January. Before teaching, he was in the R.C.A.F., Worked as a purch- asing agent with the Federal Government and as an ac- countant with General Mot- ors. His future goals are to move to other schools and he hopes that his health will The grade nine phenomenon At the end of each school year; the local elementary schools "crank out" numer- ous students they are through educating. `When these students immigrate to high school in early autumn; they are strangely enough called: Grade Nines. These people, occupy the school rapidly and usually find a dark corner to hide in. Grade nines are easy to spot. They move around the halls in large bunches, like foot- ball players in a huddle. We give the Grade Nines a warm welcome to the s^hool: INITIATION. After drat, they can have all sorts of fun. Each of them get their own neat -o locker complete with graffiti and three coat hang- ers. Make sure to remember your combinatioo and other peoples' too; so that you can stack" their locker. Gee whiz, isn't high school fun! Some teachers might even let you chew bubble' gum in class! Neat things that the high school has: a balcony in the gym, smoking areas, a pop machine and tennis courts. Upcoming events S.D.H.S. Everyone sincerely hopes he will attain all of these goals. I hope this year and years to come will bring good memories to him. - Lisa Harvey MR. MOORE SPEAKS OUT ON S.D.H.S. 1 had the pleasure of speaking to Mr. Moore. the new vice-principal, about the school. His first impressions of the school were: the students are well-behaved, and SDHS is much different than what he was accust- omed to in Clinton. Compared to Clinton, SDHS is smaller, but we have a more relaxed environ- tnent. He also said both THE HURON• EXPOSITOR, sEPTe Q, i21t 1983 — IA2P oughts of "grubby grade niner" en!.ycu firit Into • . In a small school, the mood is informal and when you know everyone it makes education much more meaningful for the student. About the semestering system he said it lets the students complete credits in a short period, but crowds a lot of work into that same time. In conclusion he added, Seaforth is a very good school and many teachers' would be pleased to teach in this institution. He is quite happy to be here. - Helen Van Loon Gym smelly at SDHS From a camera's .point of view; 1 got quite an eyeful of the goings on at 8.D.H.S.'s initiation for the new grade nine students. The school's version of initiation was for the males to be partially in drag, carryinga sign around their necks. Te young ladies dressed as men, also carry- ing a sign. Yet we have our own version. No rules applied. The niners were sold in the gymnasium first thing this morning. This was done by holding an auction, the high- quickly!. And once you, et through the hassle of gelding a locker and lock. they 'student council fee. you are broke. Tobe on time for class may be difficult , it first because of. the fltst day .of school hassle, Among may'things on a nlner's mind is Slave Day, that day of treacherous pain and agony. Randy Becker of St. Columbaa says his first day was unordinary and Steven Ryan of Walton says high school offers a big and better change than elemen- tary school. - Paul Hoste Ifr DEPOT SERVICE DEPOT a. 1VAT$ON APPLIANCE REPAIR located In Sebr, ingvllle at PHELANS PLACE PH. 393-6181 est bidder received the pack- age. The scent of the air was not very appealing to the nose. This was caused by a mixture of perfume, egg and many more tangible things. Same of the chores for the students were to carry an assorted number of things, push cars and be the targets for the older students' target practice. Thinking back to my initia- tion day, things were not as severe for me as for the "83" niners.
