I thought rd explain our iearn- iitg programs a bit more by talking about one that's im- portant to me: "Work Skills" The objectives of the work. skids program are: to develop an awareness and -ability in a variety of work skills includ- ing general skills and safety considerations through on- the-job training and job ex- perience with Katimavik sponsors; to develop an un- derstanding of the world of work in relation to possibili- les and opportunities after Katimavik; to understand the work skills and job training elements of other learning programs and the entire Katimavik experience. GOALS At the beginning of Katim- avik, participants receive a participant manual in which we write down the goals we would personally like to achieve within each learning program. For example, my goals for work skills during the time I am in Seaforth are: learning about birds; learn- ing to build beds; learning to do laundry; basic electrical work; getting to work on time and learning to organize my time; and carpentry basics and tools. We achieve these goals through our work sites, our billeting, our work at home, and our group activi- ties. At my worksite 1 have been 175 g PKG. BILLETS B Vetting also gives Ka- tima ' era many different work noes. Billetting is a two week period out of every three months where participants leave the grow and live with a family. My billetting was spent with a general carpenter in Benmil- ler. He was the perfect billet because he did many differ- ent jobs. We did cement work, carpentry, ceramic tile work, tarred a roof, built stairs and saved a roof on an old ham. Various jobs around his residence were also a part of the experience. 'Besides the jobs outside our house there are many things to to done inside the house. Some of these I consider to be' "joe-jobs" such as cooking and cleaning. But there is also creative work such as building our own bunks, shelves, solar food dryer and pig pen, as well as basic repairs around the house. We also have group activi- ties which teach us work skills. Such as organizing our own workshops to learn French and organizing our own camping trip. Most of the jobs to which I've been assigned, I have found enjoyable but some have been a drag. Don't take me wrong, though, I'm learn- ing through Katimavik that enjoyment in a lob isn't always the most important thing. With every good job there are always boring days. ' Just as Pat said in her article last week, it is impos- sible to sum up all of our programs and experiences in one article.
