Hugh Mcpflerson has taken these leisure activities a step further though he still insists he's only playing with the mighty power only on a slightly larger scale. Whit his to actually has the capability of doing will keep' Mr. McPherson and family a lot wanner at half .the cost of conventional fuel. His 52 foot creation, a backyard wind generator, which perhaps resembles a piece of modern art than anything else, is built out of various odds and ends from a scrapped car and other pieces• that he picked up. Mr. McPherson constructed his generat- or not with one purpose in mind but at this stage is wittily; to experiment with a number of varied ideas, calculating the maximum amount of power he can hope to achieve. He started planning for the generator late last v nter and started to obtain parts for it just Last May. With the help of the PUC, he erected the wind generator in his' backyard With 200 square feet of circular area, the eight -foot blades and 16•foot turbine drives two generators which in turn re -charge a set of bpttedes that enable him to heat water, thus reducing his heating costs in the winfe*. The actttal design Mr. McPherson calls a high lift turbine which will turn in only a slight wind. On the other hand it will be able to withstand a sudden terrific onslaught of wind which in other cases has totally mauled wind generators of a cheaper design. Maintenance is relative low, except for the generators that may need the brushes replaced periodically and the only casualty so far has been a tail spring•that blew off in a high, wind. But like the conscientious engineer that he is, Mr. McPherson merely replaced the tail spring with a heavier type and the generator right mow is in top working condition. Mr. McPherson says Seaforth is not situated in a high' wind area thus chances for a totally self-sufficient wind . powered home are slight. but he repeated "wind in the winter and the sun in the sunimer't. It's a motto that he closely lives by since situated just below his wind generator is a set of solar panels which in the summer- time uses the rays of the sun to transform Mr. McPherson's large home into an energy saver's dream.
