JUST HAIR is the name of a hairdressinsi salon and barber shop opened by Vicky Morrison.
Located on main street, Seaforth, the salon is open five days a week and "appointments are
not always necessary": Nicholas Longstaff wasn't too excited about getting a haircut before
going to nursery school. (Wassink photo)
School time is cold time
When your child reaches
school age, or starts nursery
school, he or she will be
exposed to many children
with colds. There are no sure
ways to avoid colds, but the
better your ,child's general
health, the stronger his or her
defenses will be ,to fight off
some infections.
Usuallyit takes several
days after breathing in the
germs before symptoms of a
cold appear. The symptoms
may be a sore throat, cough,
fever, and a stuffy nose.
Headache, body aches and
swollen glands may also be
present. Once the cold is fully
developed, it usually con-
tinues at its peak for several
days, and then lets up.
There are no known cures
for die,commencold, If,the .
symptoms are severe enough
however, your child's doctor
may help to relieve some of
the symptoms. A light diet
and plenty of fluids are
usually recommended and
sometimes medications. If
the child is coughing it does
not .necessarily mean that
there is infection in the chest.
If there is mucus and phlegm
at the back-ofthenose or in
the throat, the child will
cough to stop the infection
going down to the chest. This
is what the cough is for. The
doctor can tell whether the
infection has spread into the
chest or is still just in the nose
and throat -
If a cold does spread
deeper into the chest, the
infection can affect the air
passages of the lungs, called
the bronchial tubes. A mild
form of lung disease called
bronchitis can occur even
without fever and constant
coughing. A child who coughs
frequently should be seen by
the doctor.
Be sure to call the doctor if
youf chitil has ao fe'Ver' that
lasts for more than two or
three days, a severe head-
ache, chest pains, hard
coughing spells, ear ache, or
rusty looking phlegm which
he is coughing up. Sometimes
what seems to be only a cold
can be the beginning of a
more serious condition.

ALL COUGHS
ARE NOT COMMON
Is yours a dry cough or a
wet one? Is it hacking or more
of a throat -clearing?
The sound of your cough
may indicate whether yours is
a common cough due to cold
or symptomatic of a more
serious disease, according to
a report presented at the
Annual Meeting of the Amer-
ican Lung Association - The
Christmas Seal People - and
its medical section the Amer-
ican Thoracic Society.
Sydney S. Braman. M.D. of
the Brown University Pro-
gram of Medicine. Provi-
dence. R.1., said that in
nonsmokers a chronic dry
cough may indicate fibrosis or
scarring of the lungs is
present; while a wet cough
may be symptomatic of bron-
chitis or asthma- A cough that
is more like a throat -clearing
may reveal a sinus disease.
"Early stages of lung and
pharynx Lancer may be asso-
ciated with a dry, hacking
cough," Dr. Braman said.
and
"A chronic cough, lasting
two weeks to several months,
may also be caused by a
gastrointestinal problem, as-
piration of a foreign body or
stress. Cough receptors are
located in various parts of the
body including the sinuses,
nose, ear canal, pharynx,
bronchial tubes, esophagus
or stomach,"
Dr. Braman, discussed the
patient who Complained of a
chronic cough and ion
examination was found to
have a foreign body in his ear
canal. "He had been in the
practice of vigorously clean-
ing his ears with cotton
swabs," he said. Upon re-
moval of the cotton tip, the
cough disappeared.
A chronic cough may also
indicate mild asthma. Spasm
of the bronchial tubes often
triggers the cough receptor
there, Dr. Braman said.
Sometimesa clue to a hiatal
hernia in elderly patients, a
cough may be caused when
stomach contents of acid
"leak up" from the stomach
into the esophagus. Regurgit
ation of stomach content may
lead to coughing, especirily
at night.
Or a cough may be ps' rho -
genic, a result of men'ai nr
emotional problem, Dr. Bra-
man said. "Adolescents or
young adults may exhibit this
type of cough, especially
when there is a secondary
gain, such as not having to go
to school," he said. "A clue
to the psychogenic cough is
its absence during sleep.
"Chronic coughers should
resist the urge to take cough
suppressents and other over -
the -counter -drugs, as these
may mask an underlying
illness," Dr. Braman said.
"Early detection is especially
important in cases of lung or
larynx cancer."
