Keeling fit is especially for you BY SUSAN HUNDERTMARK There's an old cliche about the anxious husband urging his wife to sit down and take it easy as soon as he discovers she is pregnant. That situation rarely happens anymore since, it's important for women to remain active and exercise both during pregnancy and after delivery, says Fitness Canada. The benefits of keeping fit for two include more strength which will assist in labor and delivery, better circulation which nourishes the baby more efficiently, less fatigue and the prevention of backaches, varicose veins, constipation and extreme weight gain. Exercise is part of an effort for complete health for both the woman and child and should be combined with proper nutrition, limiting alcohol intake and quitting smok- ing. A warm-up before exercise is particularly important during pregnancy since joints and ligaments loosen in preparation for delivery. ily stretching and warming up muscles you'll be less apt to roll an ankle or have any other injury. "I had to be more careful with my balance when 1 was pregnant. High kicks would throw me off balance," says Cheryl Phillips, a Seaforth Dance Fit instructor who taught fitness classes for three months of her pregnancy, and then continued exercising at home. Mrs. Phillips, who has always been active in sports, checked first with her doctor who encouraged her to keep active. While pregnant, she rests more often throughout the day if she's exercising. "Just use your common sense and listen to your body. You know what your own body can do." she says. "People don't listen to those old wives' tales which used to make zehrs fine markets... of fine foods pregnancy such a terrible time." AEROBICS Aerobic exercise will help both the breathing and circulation of a pregnant woman< 1t strengthens both the heart and ' ; . the lungs which will be under more stress during pregnancy. The lungs are working to provide more oxygen to the growing fetus while they can't expand as well because of the increasingly restricted chest space. The heart may be pumping up to 15 times more per minute since it is providing more blood to the fetus. Pregnancy is a time to maintain your level of aerobic exercise rather than increase it:„ Rhythmic exercises like swimming, walk- ing and cycling are preferable to activities with sudden stops, starts and twists like tennis or basketball. Exercises for the abdomen are especially. - important since the abdominal muscles do the work during pregnancy. Strong but elastic abdominals protect the uterus, support the spine, and assist in delivery. Exercising the muscles in the upper back, shoulders and the chest will help to support breasts that will become one to three pounds heavier in nine months. A firm brassiere wilt also help reduce strain on supporting muscles. "If you exercise while you're pregnant, you can get back into shape a little quicker. And, 1 found, when you're pregnant, you're tired even when you sit so you might as well exercise. It makes you feel good," says Mrs. Phillips. For more information on specific exer- cises, write Fitness Canada, 365 Laurier Avenue West, Ottawa, KIA OX6 for their booklet called Fitness ano Pregnancy. Also, consult with your doctor and qualified fitness instructor. Inexperienced riders have the most accidents In 1982, 104 motorcycle drivers and 22 passengers were killed on Ontario's streets and highways. Ano- ther 4,603 motorcycle drivers and 905 passengers were injured. The number of people licensed to drive motorcycles in Ontario has more than doubled in the past ten years. However, less than 20 per cent of new riders take structured motorcycle rider training and a substantial percentage of accidents in- volve inexperienced riders. The Ontario Safety League has established 32 centres throughout the province this year where the Canada Safety Council's Motorcycle Rider Training course is available. Local motorcycle dealers should be able to direct you to the course nearest you. It makes sense to get quality instruction before exposing yourself to todays traffic conditons. The League also points out to hikers that the use of proper clothing and footwear should be of primary concern to any safety -minded motor- cyclist. Substantial pants and jackets, gloves and boots can successfully reduce injuries. This is purely common sense. Yet casual observance would indicate a growing popularity during summer months for cut-off jeans, tee shirts and running shoes. Frequently passengers have been noted without any footwear whatso- ever. While the malTTtatory use of helmets in 1968 substantially reduced the number of motor- cycle deaths, there seems little point in protecting the head if the rest of the body is exposed.
