CNE ,trip doe
- fYP IC1ABib11V iii
Recently I had the oppot
tuln)tyto go to the Canadian
National Exhibition, one. of
thg world's largest faits. It Is
always really exciting to go to
the CNE . to see all the
exhibits and go on rides. This
year 1 even had the chance to
go to the grand standshow at
night where we saw the
crowning of Miss CNE, It
was a really nice day at the
fair.
The CNE is a lot of fun and
1 sure loved being there.
Besides all of the buildings
and midway, there is also
food, lots of food. That's the
part. that 1 like! In a whole
building full of all types of
foods. there is a spaghetti
and meatsauce for 75c,
french fries' for as cheap as
50c, hamburgs, hot dogs,
corn on the cob. pizza,
Chinese food, tacos and
many kinds of food that 1
have never. heard of. The
food building is so big that
they even have a sign in each
row so that you can find
things and won't get lost.
SENSATIONAL
The midway is also sensa-
tional, much different from
midways around here. You
could easily spend a whole
day without spending any
'time in the other buildings.
There are several roller
coasters, ferns wheels, a
merry-go-round, and many
more rides. Then there. were
all sorts of games of chance
which promise that you will
win terrific prizes such as
•
' ' have to • be: co l ,

Vec,,eyyl'.don't tell you that

deal since the prize may only
be worth, 56:991 However, it
is enterta• A PICNIC
.Each of these things to do
at the CNE, 'although lots of
fun, costs money, which is
not entirely necessary. You
could probably have a great
day at the CNE and only pay
admission. It is not necessary
to buy your lunch at the
Exhibition. In fact you could
probably even have a better
lunch by taking a picnic
lunch and eating it beside
Lake Ontario. And there is
lots to see in all of the
buildings scattered through-
out the grounds. There is a
building where you could
spend lots of time watching
the horse show. Children
mold gond pet baby
animals in the same build-
ing. When we were at the
Exhibition, the horse from
the movie The Black Stallion
was there for children to see
and pet.
Teenagers could amuse
themselves for a great deal of
time in a tent featuring
arcade games. It costs noth-
ing to play these games
although your time is limit-
ed. I'm sure a lot of girls
could have a great time
browsing through the many
displays of clothing, jewel-
lery and cosmetics in build-
ings of the CNE. It costs
nothing to look, as long as

gets and recipes
Many people have said
that the CNE Is a lot of fun if
you are willing to accept the
opnsequence of coming home
broke. but emptying your
pockets is not necessary. You
can still have Tots of fun by
seeing how little you can
spend and how much you can
do.
The CNE is a super place
to visit but it makes me' feel
really fortunate to live in
Seaforth. It gets too crowd-
ed. People bump into you
without saying excuse me.
i realize that there is a big
difference in the population
of the city and of Seaforth;
but 1 am still glad to live in a
small town like Seaforth
where you can go to the Fall
Fair and enjoy yourself with
friends you are fad'iiliar with.
The midway and games may
not be as big or as thrilling
but the whole atmosphere is
more caring and on the whole
much better.

Karsten Carroll, ot•Qoder(ch St. W. has
spent his summer at Goderich beaches
oolleetinggolf balls.l;ie collectedso many
that his father Paul, came up with the idea
df setting up a golf ball roadside stand.
"They were taking 9p tpo much room,"
says Paul. `
With assistance from his grandfather,
Howard Carroll of Goderich, a former
Seaforth, resident, Karsten has found about
.150 golf balls in the river near the Maitland
Golf Course near Goderich. His grand-
father paddies a canoe and Karsten does
the looking.
"He doesn't help get the balls because
he's blind," says Karsten. "He paddles
while I look over thelpraw for golf balls. 1 ve
collected for the lase two years. This is my
third year."
GRADED BALLS
In business three days, Karsten has
made 550 in seven hours. He grades his
golf balls by brand names and condition. "I
sell junk balls, 15 for 51 or eight for 50
cents. Good golf balls with no marks sell
for 75 cents. The ones in the store would
sell for 51.50 or 52, 1 think."
Although he doesn't play golf, he says
the best golf balls are Titalist and
Topflight. 'Dunlops are told to be good,
hut 1 don's think they are." he says.
"Hardly anybody, uses them, Tltalist is the. `.
most ppopplar
Collecting aloe, egg' cartons' of golf balls'
is easy using a golf ball retriever. "I have
to use a 10 -foot tetriever in some spots•
Other times, I can reach dawn into'the
water and get a golf ball. I'like the cotgrCd
ones the best. They're worth, mini Money,'
1 hate leaving golf balls behind 11 they're
green or orange.'', "'
A RECORD.."
Finding 34 balls in one .,Session la' a,
record for Karsten; "The best time tO ge'is
between three and four in the afternoon,
when the sun cotes ogt. Sometimes Atte
only part of a ball Lean sceds.about . the size
of a dime,"
"I see golfers•shoot then! hate the ri er,"
says Karsten, "One,almoSt hit me•'1t was
orange. I couldn't find it that day, ,but
found it the next. One person askedfor'his
golf ball back and I gave it to him. It was
fust a junk ball anyway. It had a'big slice•ih
d."
Karsten says he will keep selling from
. the front yard of his home until he runs out.
"Every weekend I find' more, unless
somebody was ahead of me. I'm going to
do it again next year."
Ten years old and going on 1I in
November, Karsten, a grade six student at
SPS, plans to save enough golf ball money
to buy computer games, "or something I
really like.'
