Scheduled completion date Is New curbs and gutters are part of the project, awarded to Thurs., Sept. 1. (Photo by White) Legion kitchen addition is underway. Work has been started on the addition to the kitchen and is progressing nicely. This week should see quite a difference. At the moment the addition doesn't seem very much but we hope it will make a better kitchen to get around in. Two weeks ago a lawn bowling team of Jack Muir, John Patterson and Neil Bell entered the Provincial finals. Out of 40 entries they cane in fourth which was quite a good effort. We hope the team will be able to compete another year. Congratula- tions Comrades, The three golf teams, that qualified for the District. Finals at Preston were not s fortunate. The top team came within a few strokes of qualifying but were edged out by a team from another branch. On behalf of the golfers who had the privilege of playing that day, 1 would like to thank the branch. Even though some of us lined the bottom of the water hazards with balls, it was a good day. In the August issue of the Reader's Digest is an article on a prisoner -of -war in a Japanese prison camp and his fight for survival until the end of the war. The men who died in these prisons should not be forgotten. 'At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. -Gordon Scott P.R.O. EwtwtQgwmowt Tomorrow Box optimistic THE HURON EXPOSITOR, AUGUST $1, 1903+- A7 )3Y SUSAN HUNDERTMARH The toad to equality between men and women may be along and hard one, bpt if The Tomorrow Box, now playing at the Blyth Summer Festival, is any indication, `the destination can be reached. The play's main character, Maureen Cooper, is a 60 -year-old farm wife who has allowed husband Jack to make all the decisions during their 40 year marriage. When she discovers he means to surprise her with the announcement that he has sold their farm and intends for the to move into a condominium in Florida, she finally speaks up. And, he doesn't like it. Anne Anglin does a wonderful job playing Maureen, a woman raised with 4-11 and the W.I. who plays down her years of working in the barn and the fields and taking care of the house and children. To be helpful, she gives her daughter-in-law, a feminist law student, lessons on how to use an electric kettle. She thinks nothing of jumping when her husband bellows for his tea until her lifestyle, her home and her Royal'Doultons are threatened. Armed with a long list of her contributions to the farm, she prepares to stand up for her rights. DEMANDING Jack Cooper, played by Dean Hawes, is a man who would make any woman cringe, A demanding and domineering farmer, he goes into a rage and rips up his wife's list into little pieces and threatens to divorce her if she doesn't come to her senses. The funniest scene of the play happens when Maureen sits down With daughter -in. law Alice and Alice's sister, Lisa (a Toronto lliwyer), WhIle sipping lemonade she doesn't know is ',piked with vodka. Maureen contemplates what she could do with her life alone at 60. Her suggestion of becoming a divorced photographer like Margaret Trudeau makes the audience roar with laughter; Anne Anglin enjoyed the • ad to take a few moments to compose here • so much that she self before the play continued. The sub -plot of the play involves the resulting conflict between Alice and her husband Joe. Alice, played byDeborah Grover, is shocked to see Joe (Pierre Tetrault) go along with histfather in the "surprise". Since he is buying the farm from his father, Yoe seems more concerned about sending his mother off to Florida than hearing her objections about leaving her home and friends. HOUSE TRAILER The setting is a house trailer in a park near a small village in rural Ontario. The cramped quarters add to the comedy when Alice, eager to make an impression of neatness on her mother-in-law, hides Joe's socks in the saucepan and Maureen finds them while making tea. The Tomorrow Box shows the comedy in a' situation that could happen on any farm in Ontario. The optimistic ending suggests that somewhere in the battle of the sexes, even the most traditional men can learn to respect the worth of women and compro- mise. L It's not work to walk.
