Verti- cillium wilt can be a destruc- tive disease In alfalfa fields. We are suspicious that it was partially responsible for some of the winter kill in some fields last winter. if you have verticillium wilt in your alfal- fa, it should show up during a dry spell It.tvill.be especially noticeable if your alfalfa is at least 25 to 30 cm, high. DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS The disease is present in the soil and enters the plant through the roots. it spreads upward in the plant via the water conducting tissue and enters the leaves where it causes yellowing. This is initially at the tops of the leaflets, but eventually in- volves the entire leaf which finally dies. In the early stages of the disease, wilting of the leaves is common during the heat of the day, with recovery during the cooler nights. Eventually the wiltingbecomes perma- nent (esp ciaily-if the current lack of rain continues) and the leaflets die turning white to light grey, Diseased plants can be stunted. All shoots on a plant may be affected or the symp- toms may be limited to one or two stems. There are several other diseases which resem- ble the symptoms of verticil- lium wilt. If you are not sure about your plants, bring the plant, including 10-15 cm. of attached root to the ag. office. "This year, things could be even worse." In the first three months of Bs fiscal year, the ,FCC allocated its entire budget for the year. But when it sought approval to lend an additional $f00 million to meet the approved loans on file, the. governt(i'ent said it could only loan 5250 million. The -credit situation is so severe that FCC has refused to process loan applications since June 10, To make matters' worse, FCC sources say the 'charter- ed banks 'are pulling qut of long-term mbrtgage+lending to the farm community. "Where are . farmers to turn for long-terrtl finan- cing?" Barrie asked. "The PCC doesn't have the money and the banks aren't interest- ed in the long-term_ mortgage market." Barrie called on the federal government to make the FCC ' a primary source of credit to the farm community. as ifwas in the 1970s. in 1977, the FCC accounted for 43 per cent of long -terra farm credit extend- ed in the country. But in 1981 the agency accounted for only 21 per cent of long-term farm credit extended. "It's quite obvious the government isn't letting the FCC live up to its mandate as a major source of farm credit," Barrie said. "These days the agency is little more than a lender of last resort. •' A first step towards revital- izing the FCC would be to let it increase its budget to meet the loan requests on file. And to -provide for adequate long- term capital in the future, the government should introduce Agri -bonds, said Barrie, Agri -bonds would offer farmers a source of long-term funding at interest rates below the going market rates. Agri -bonds would do this by granting investors tax con- cessions, so a lower interest rate could be paid on the bonds, but the after-tax re- turn would be comparable to conventional bonds. "All we want is for the government to give farmers the credit they deserve." Barrie said.
